A Room of One’s Own

I talk a lot in my new book about how I believe everyone needs a space in their home that really feels like THEM.  It’s important to have a peaceful spot to recharge, relax and just spend some quiet time. Especially when you are a busy mom.  I’m CRAVING some downtime (alone) right now and it had me thinking about this special room we did for a wonderful client.  She decided to make this small living space her “lady den”. A place to read, have a cup of tea ( or glass of wine) while watching TV, chat with a friend…. a space just for her. Isn’t that dreamy? And to make it even better, she really let us have fun in here!

This was the room when we started- pretty empty and swathed in this cranberry color.  She wanted to make a big change, but without doing any construction. So we put this gorgeous deep blue grasscloth on all the walls in inside the bookshelves and picked this cheery floral for the roman shades. This palette was the jumping off point for the room.

We had these super comfy swivel chairs done in a crisp stripe and added this super cool textural trim to the skirt. I LOVE THESE CHAIRS!!!! :)  We had my friends at Dunes & Duchess make this great side table in a limed oak that matches the sconces they also made for over the fireplace!  The little zebra bench, custom made by Liven Up Design, fits perfectly right in between the built ins and acts almost like a window seat.

I adore these sconces, especially on the dark walls. They look so sculptural, and since the ceilings are nice and high, they fit so much better than the small ones previously in this space. The ceiling fixture is such a fun piece too, absolutely perfect for this room.

We found this painting by Julia Contacessi right before we shot this space, and we could not believe how absolutely perfect is was for the space- in scale, color and composition. Doing a room top to bottom like this is really gratifying- we get to really see our vision out fully and the space feels perfectly thought out and complete.
