As a person who came of age in the late 80’s and 90’s, I am having a hilariously good time CRINGING at the recent articles I’ve seen for Fall 2018 trends. I mean, it’s BEYOND my comprehension that these styles are considered “in” right now. And yes, I can hear myself, I sound like my own mother who probably felt the exact same way when I wore all these items in the actual 90’s. But I mean, wasn’t it bad enough that it was in style once?
I mean, just a pair of acid wash high rise jeans is offensive enough. But a whole denim tuxedo situation done in this horrific 80’s material? I simply CAN NOT.
Some of you may be on board with this, but it goes WAY too Little House for me, and the whole pairing it with cowboy boots thing just gives me all the feels, in a very bad, bad way. I mean, the ruffled collar and wrists and waistline? I have nightmares about this stuff.
Neon alone is bad. Satin alone is pretty bad. Neon AND satin together in one garment is enough to make me never want to go shopping again until the fashion world has come to it’s Kardashian-crazed senses.
I really canot believe that the things I wore as a chubby middle schooler are on the most coveted runways right now. Balloon sleeves (that matches oh-so-well with my Laura Ashley balloon shades in my room) are one of the least flattering things one could wear. And to think I was so horrified when shoulder pads came back in!? That was child’s play!
I mean….
Not like, slightly oversized, but COMICALLY oversized. And a lot fo them in neon too. I makes me recall my old 80’s ski jackets- except mine were a little more tailored than this.
This image is hard to look at because it not only features the bleach splattered denim of yesteryear, but paired with neon tie dye AND a bucket hat (in bleached denim no less!)
There was a Cher Horowitz abundance of bright plaids on the Fall 2018 runways. Now, I like me some plaid, but not THIS much plaid.
I actually spared myself wearing this trend in the 80’s and 90’s, even the crimper loving, frosty blue eye shadowed younger version of myself thought it was a bit too much. I’d rather not look like a robot, thanks.
OK, so what popular styles DO I like that will make you look current but not like a walking trend monster? CLICK IMAGES TO SHOP ITEMS!
At this point, it shouldn’t be considered a trend as it’s a classic, but it was ALL over the runways for fall in outerwear, dresses, accents– you name it.
Super tailored pieces with lovely details were a big trend too– and one that is based in classic good style so no worries about it being “out” next year. Look for double breasted blazers, tailored wool coats with pleating and other details and trench inspired dresses.
Layered with faux fur, velvet, suede or knit- dark florals will be a big part of fall looks.
A trend that carries over from last fall and winter, I adore the cozy, winter weight concealing oversize knits. Especially with big turtlenecks!
A huge trend, but one you need to be cautious with as some of the coats I’ve seen can easily go “giant bathrobe” or “rogue Sesame Street character”. Bonus points if it’s leopard.

Good one ilike to wear this stuff
Olá , eu acho que vi você visitou meu local então vim “devolver o favor”.
Eu sou tentando encontrar coisas para aumentar meu web site!
Suponho que sua okey usar algumas das suas ideias!!!!
your modeling website is so beautiful i love this website keep posting and sharing and visit my website imgsrc
I like dresses model this fall, especially the prave dress. It looks so elengant n floral.
OK, I am with you all these trends except for one – I love acid-washed denim even more now than before! Call me crazy but I just love the effect. I would not want a whole suit of it however.
try shopping for a mother-of-the-groom dress in the middle of this little house trend! even erdem did it!!! like wtf? no way, no how! my son is getting married next weekend and I just found a dress yesterday! there are ruffles, but there’s also snake skin print! thank you fashion gods!
I have to dissagree in the denim jeans. I’m wearing a pair right now and they look awesome! Leopard for me is always a topic, Sometimes I love it and some times looks so tacky =/
Oh, I love this post. I was in 7th grade when stirrup pants were all the rage. I also had the Laura Ashley floral balloon curtains in my mauve and green bedroom!
Those trends might reflect the current state of the world (specifically the US)- just a MESS!
I’m so with you Erin!!!!! Although I did purchase a pair of high rise faded jeans and I like them! No full suit of denim though! Still love a little animal print now and then as well! Have a great weekend:)
It always pains me to see the return of any literal look from the past, whether 70s fringe, 80s neons, 90s plaids, or even 60s mod. References and influences yes; literal resurrections no. There are so many talented people working in the fashion industry, surely they can offer something new.
After our horror week of politics here in Australia your post bought welcome smiles. OMG those
stirrup pants are just AWFUL, never expected to see them back.
Ba ha ha! Rolling over here. These are always my most favorite of your posts. Thank you, thank you!!
You forgot the chunky white sneaker on the no list. So bad.
I read once that if you wore a trend once, you shouldn’t wear it the second time. I hate all those new things. I do like plaid, though :)
I’ve read that also, and completely agree!
This post is an excellent example of the difference between the words Fashion and Style.
As a child in the 70’s & 80’s, I agree with all your likes, Erin!
“Rogue Sesame Street character”! Omg my sides hurt from laughing!
I totally agree and also I can’t understand that anybody would like not to
mention buy it.
This fashion drama lasts alreay too long
You are so damn funny, I can’t even handle it!! Do you ever get the feeling that a team of fashion designers sit around going ‘let’s come up with the most ridiculous and EXPENSIVE stuff we can – which will look absurd on everyone – and see which fools buy it’?!!! On a side note, thank you for making your blog such a cool, fun and insightful place to visit on the net…..god knows right now we need it. Have a great weekend with your little man.
Im with another reader, buy less, buy quality. I don’t know who would wear the clothes at the start of the post. I’ll stick to the classics with a twist to keep things interesting. And if Im being honest, the only item I need this Fall is a good quality black blazer.
Love everything you love and hate everything you hate!!!! I followed many trends but the one I never followed were gogo boots. Still not a fan of any white footwear.
I LOVE these posts! I know you’re interiors but I come to you for fashion. Can’t wait for awards season to begin! Fashion Friday idea… formal ensembles for requisite holiday parties? I can always pick a dress but then the shoes and accessories stump me!
Have you seen the fall collection for little girls at Target?? Orange corduroy zip-up jumpers, lace-up shorts, and plaid pants with zippers. It’s like they’re dressing as me in 1997, but without the foam platform sandals 😆
Beyond ugly!! Except leopard which is actually introduced most years as something new but I view it as a classic accent and do love it in single doses with an outfit.
Oh happy Friday! Thanks for making my day! And we thought we looked good back then, please not again! Add “fanny packs” to the list of what NOT to wear.
I feel bad for the models……….
Ha, I thought the same thing. That poor girl in the denim up top. She knows it looks awful.
What? No Hypercolor shirts…?
Omg, I forgot about Hypercolor!!!!!
Leopard, over-side knits, tailored- Yes. Prairie dress, satin, and oversize florals, HELL NO!
Umm… some of these pieces make me scared for the future of fashion…

I don’t like most of the fall trends. Give me investment clothing. The classics. Cashmere sweaters, for example. Buy less. Buy better.
Laura Ingalls would have LOVED that dress … and just about nobody else. I’m always on board with leopard and chunky oversized sweaters. Could pretty much live in them all winter
And acid washed denim tuxedo? Please don’t let it be …
OMG–Thank you for making my day!! Love the blog and love your voice, loud and clear, on fashion and other matters.
