Heather Chadduck’s Southern Living Idea House
I have found, in my experiences, that showhouses tend to be really confusing style-wise. True, it’s interesting to have every room in a house be vastly different as a way to illustrate different points of view, but it can be discombobulating too- and also hard to then sell the property given the crazy, mis-matched rooms and installations. And that can seem a bit wasteful of resources. But when one designer can do a whole house as a way to show off their talent and ideas, and it’s done in a way to please and not shock, it can be glorious! Mark Sikes did one in Newport that was incredible, and now Heather Chadduck has tackled one on Amelia Island/ Crane Island, Florida for Southern Living Magazine that is BEYOND incredible. Honestly, this is, top to bottom, one of my favorite homes I’ve seen in YEARS. I could move in here right now and just bring my toothbrush. As a designer, getting to execute a whole house with no real limitations is pretty incredible, and Heather simply killed it. Let’s take a peek, shall we? The house itself is stunning, designed by Historical Concepts who designed one of the CUTEST places I’ve been to, Palmetto Bluff in South Carolina.
Just in the entry Heather used so many things that I love- blue and white, rustic beams, smoke bell lanterns and little tassel details.
This living room is simply stunning. I adore it all (and also spy my second book on the big round table too! Heather kindly asked to use it in the space!)
This hanging rail detail for the art installation is PURE genius. Also those lamp shades. Oh my.
The bright dining area is so cheerful and relaxed, yet tailored (like the rest fo the house). The painted floors are especially incredible.
I assume this wallpaper backsplash is protected by a sheet of acrylic or glass– and is a GENIUS use of such an amazing pattern.
And the pantry is just darling with it’s skinny stripe wallpaper and skirted lower shelving.
The canopy of this bed is in one of Heather’s own fabrics, and really makes such an amazing statement.
I love how it’s repeated on the drapes in the sitting area of the master suite.
And this BATHROOM. I mean, a green tub you guys. A green tub.
I would happily be a guest in this incredible guest room. The painted blue trim is such a lovely touch.
And this Soane Britain wallpaper has always been such a favorite of mine- to see it in this application is pretty amazing.

HOT DAMN. This room made me gasp. It’s part of a playroom and the little banquettes are so fun and functional for family play/game time. That wallcovering though??? WOW. Also, pale blue and mossy green is such an amazing combination I have always loved.
I can barely deal with how incredible this bunk room is. Truly, it’s almost too much.

And laundry room! Love the neutral tone cabinetry with the wallpaper and slate.
The water spout for the dog bowl in the wall here? This is the stuff of dreams.

Amen! Showcase homes can be schizophrenic and rarely inspire any usable ideas. This one is chock full and I’m inspired to implement several. So so pretty – been a fan of H Chadduck for years. Also used the Thibault stripe wallpaper shown in the stairway area in our powder room-love it! Very homey and cosy – after that one whole house designer is way to go – show houses confuse me as well😜
Got my copy of Southern Living in yesterday’s mail. I agree, I loved everything about this house & looked through the photos several times. Enjoyed your commentary, though, bringing my attention to some details I hadn’t noticed. Heather Chadduck brought this house to such a high level! Another example of a one-designer showhouse is the Princess Margaret Cancer Center house that Brian Gluckstein has done the past few years. It is really interesting to see how he connects the rooms while giving each its own personality, something you’d only get with one designer.
When I received my issue of SouthernLiving, I knew it would be special…true art of design is to look at a picture and the rooms speak to you.She did that throughout the house….stunning and achievable .Many ideas can be used and affordable.

Wondering if you know a good source for the natural shades shown here in the dining area (and in the bath, lined with Soane fabric/paper). I saw these recently in a Rita Konig-decorated Mill Valley, CA, residence designed by Gil Schafer. Any ideas? Also, what are your go-to sources and recommended styles/colors for the bamboo-looking natural shades pictured here (e.g., room w/canopy bed)? Many thanks!

You are spot on … wow! What makes this house a WOW home is the use of warmer colors, textures and cream-based color fabrics. It’s so warm and cozy, yet looks current. Thanks so much for pointing out things I’d have overlooked! Btw – does the pooch come with the house?!

Thank you for writing about this! I poured through your latest book over the weekend and every page made me want to drag you to Nashville to fix up my house. The next day, my copy of SL came in the mail and I seriously stopped and stared at that living room picture. It was like THIS, this is IT. It’s so nice to see a cosmopolitan designer from Boston agree with my Southern taste. Because you know what, when it’s good its good!
