Inspiration to Reality: Restaurant to Dining Room
On my flight home last night I was reading one of the airline magazines as I silently prayed Henry would not have a complete meltdown during our delay (he didn’t, such a good boy) and spotted a small picture of a GORGEOUS space that turned out to be the Plume restaurant in DC. I adore the scenic grisaille wallpaper combined with the brass accents and antique details.
I thought this would be a great jumping off point for a dining room, so I created the design for one inspired by the space. I think it’s awesome and would love to see it executed! Maybe in my next house! :)
- This mural paper is actually of Virginia, so it’s very close to what is shown in the Plume restaurant which I believe is of Thomas Jefferson’s estate Monticello.
- A vintage Federal mirror looks great above a buffet or a fireplace.
- I have wanted to use this chandelier for YEARS- just adore it!
- Simple sconces with crystal stems make a slightly modern statement.
- A pair of brass pheasants for a mantel (I have a pair like this on mine, actually) or on a buffet.
- Grey silk draperies look great against this wallpaper.
- I think this table from Ballard is amazing with the brass strapping around the edges. I’d do it in a walnut finish in this room.
- Another Ballard piece, these Louis style chairs would have grey velvet fronts and a stripe on the back.
- This simple grey sisal rug in a classic Greek Key pattern is the perfect thing to ground the space.
And if you want to get fancy and use a tablecloth, you could have one made with greek key trim around the base of the skirt in a charcoal and white colorway. Would be very pretty!

It took forever but she created her own design and executed it. Personally I would have bailed after the first day so I can’t help being impressed. You also have a fine arts degree … this would help fill in all those endless hours of free time that working moms of toddlers with their own business and blog have to deal with. I think she has a cat; practically the same…
Frankly one day of babysitting my grandkids leaves me texting Mommy to please please come home.

Gorgeous! Do you think this would be too much in a formal dining room in a condo vs a house?
This is such a great post! I was lucky enough to stay at The Jefferson and eat at The Plume twice last March while in DC. The food was spectacular, the service was exemplary, and the surroundings were just as beautiful as they appear in the photos. After returning home, I had to track down silver pheasants for my own dining table as a memento of the experience! I am eager to get back to DC, if only to stay at The Jefferson again!
Girl, you just need to move to VA, that’s all there is to it.
I live in Washington D.C. and that dining room is even more jaw-droppingly gorgeous in person. There is a “library” booth that is to die for. The food – at least a few years ago, last time I was there – was also excellent. It is a very special occasion restaurant in the beautiful Jefferson Hotel, right down the street from the White House.
I second what Fizzyblonde said in her above comment. I would also recommend Quill, which is the bar at the Jefferson Hotel, for a drink prior to dinner at Plume. Plume also has a special resting place for your handbag.
