One of our all time favorite clients (whose Boston home is in EOS the book) surprised us a year or so ago when she told us she was building an awesome vacation home in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and asked us if we could remotely decorate the space. We immediately said “hell yes” and got to helping her! Last week I took my family out to stay there for a few days and not only see the project in person, but explore a part of the country I had never seen. Traveling that far with Henry was a bit stressful, but he was a champ and we did lots of things to try to make it as enjoyable for him (and therefore us) as possible. More on that after we take a peek at the house!
Moccasin Chute Lodge is within a new development called Shooting Star at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain and Teton Village (and is available for rent all year-see more info HERE). It’s a large, modern log cabin-y style home with stunning views of the Jackson Hole slopes with enough room for a large family trip. We wanted to embrace the style found commonly in this area, but make sure it was still modern and anything but kitschy and certainly family friendly.
The welcoming front porch!
In the entry we wallpapered one wall with Nobilis’ wood grain paper (the same on I used it Henry’s closet- clearly a fave of mine). This added the natural texture I wanted and created a “moment” when you step into the house. A large round mirror on rope anchors the wall and is flanked by antique dog prints found on Etsy we had custom framed (the owner is a big time dog lover like we are!). A cool lucite and hide bench is perfection here as is the marble and wood side table from Anthropologie. Topped with a jug vase from Terrain and faux branches (this is a part time home so we need greenery that won’t die) the space gets a little life. I wanted something truly funky and cool on the ceiling so we went with this Kelly Wearstler fixture that fits perfectly. A vintage rug from the owner’s mother adds some color and a vintage vibe while the modern leather woven baskets (I am obsessed with these) give a place to toss scarves and mittens in the winter or hiking sticks in the summer.
The kitchen is a mix of rustic beams, grey stained wood and topped off with a barnwood island
We found this vintage runner at Brimfield and it fits so perfectly in size and color!
Some modern molded barstools that are easy to clean were added to the island for seating. We didn’t want everything to be rustic, but also nothing too precious, and these are an unexpected twist in a mountain home.
Off the kitchen is the great room with a huge stone fireplace and cozy seating area comprised of a large linen sofa, custom coffee table wrapped in a Ralph Lauren stripe fabric atop a wool sisal rug.
We made this gorgeous throw blanket to cover the sofa (dogs, renters, kids- you know) from another Ralph Lauren wool fabric and paired it with some custom blue pillows and faux fur accents.
This was taken int he winter before everything was installed, but gives you a sense of the incredible open space!
Our morning view!
The dining area is one of my favorite parts- not only because of the incredible artwork by Nine Francois, but also the drop dead gorgeous vintage rug we found with the perfect tones of tan and blue. I wanted to roll all over it in glee when I finally got to see it in person! A giant table from RH can seat 12 with simple Windsor side chairs and slipcovered end chairs.
This buffet from RH was perfect in style but also in it’s massive size (if you ever wonder who can buy the ginormous pieces they have- THIS is the kind of house they work in!)
This cool trunk style piece serves as a bar with vintage antlers we found at Brimfield and a vintage wood basket sourced from Ramble Market. (Ignore the jet lagged, just woke up self in the mirror.)
The powder room was the perfect sot for us to use Phillip Jeffries studded grasscloth, don’t you think?
The master suite is awesome, again this pic taken before accessories were in but it shows the space nicely. A custom Gates bed from Kristin Drohan anchors the room with yummy layered rugs, linen bedding and the world’s most comfy chaise.
Some more things installed here (but also Andrew’s clothes everywhere- when you have a baby on vacation, you don’t get to set up pretty shots as it turns out)
We used this massive (5″ wide!) embroidered and beaded Mary McDonald Trim on the window treatments and it’s AWESOME.
Love the intersting Bernhardt side tables too “)
The master bath is ginormous and painted F&B’s Mouse’s Back.
We turned what was supposed to be a library into another guest room, complete with a handmade barnwood headboard sourced on Etsy and a great Slim Aarons print of skiiers from OKL. The room is painted F&B Hague Blue.
The door to this room is an amazing sliding barn door. Love.
What might be my favorite room- the bunk room! Beds are all from RH and we evenfit in two platform beds under the windows so the room sleeps six! A combination of camp blankets, linen, jute, hide and ticking stripe sheets- this room screams western style!
Each sleeping space has it’s own little brass reading light from Schoolhouse Electric too :)
We framed vintage bandanas for wall decor.
Ok, maybe this one is my favorite- the junior master suite. So hard to pick! I truly am delighted with how this whole house came out despite never seeing it in person until now! This home seemed like the PERFECT spot for Cole & Sons Woods wallpaper, just behind the bed (which is an adorable Ethan Allen one). I realize that tiny skull looks silly- we’re still looking for the right pieve for above the bed and someone hung that as a placeholder :)
A custom Petern Dunham bolster pillow adds a pop of color and the West Elm rug layered over the wall to wall makes for a cozy feel.
Room details- an incredible chest from Wisteria and feather prints from Jayson Home.
But we spent most of the time outside! My brother bought me (Andrew) a hiking pack (this one if interested) for Henry for my birthday and he loved it and it made it easy to bring him to out of the way places a stroller can’t reach!
We took Henry to Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park and took a boat ride and hike which was so much fun.
We also took the gondola from Teton Village up to the peak and had waffles on top of the world! Then took the smaller gondola up to a cool bar/ restaurant called Piste for evening cocktails overlooking the Tetons! There is so much to do with kids in Teton Village (albeit slightly older ones than Henry) it really is a great family destination.
Henry also got to see horses for the first time :)
One of my favorite spots in the town of Jackson was Persephone Bakery. The design was spot on but so was the coffee!
Loved this little butter painting in a nook there (and the marble topped cafe tables).
One of the best things we did was rent baby gear through Jackson Hole Baby Gear so we didn’t have to bring it but Henry had everything to keep him entertained and comfy- a crib, high chair, jumperoo and walker. Our rental car place rented us a car seat too. In most major travel destinations you can find places like this which makes flying SOOOOO much easier – the only thing we brought was our stroller (which is now missing a piece thanks to the airlines, but next time we will buy the travel bag and use that to ensure no accessories or small parts get lost when gate checking). I also shipped a box ahead of time with diapers, wipes, formula, food and other essentials I didn’t want to have to lug on the plane. Moccassin Chute has a property manager to help coordinate all of this, and most hotels will help with this too. Traveling with kids is NOT easy, so taking these extra steps really made it less stressful.
Henry is thoroughly depressed that his Jumperoo at home does not have this view! Of course, we both now have colds, but the trip was worth it! I highly recommend you check it out and consider renting the house we designed if you go!
And we LOVE working on long distance projects like this! E-mail us at [email protected] to learn more and get on our waitlist (now booking for spring 2017)
Erin,
You hit it out of the park on this one. I am from out west and have seen so many poorly done mountain homes. You avoided all the cliche pieces and references and created a modern, warm, comfortable retreat.
Some your best work here …
beautiful house! i’ve got it tagged for a future trip to jackson hole, one of my favorite places! we took that gondola ride also (to the waffles). absolutely beautiful! did they tell you that people ski down from there?!?
It’s so beautiful it’s literally breathtaking. Wish I could afford the $943 dollars a night though :/
Can you tell me what Ralph Lauren stripe fabric you used on the coffee table? Its beautiful. Thanks.
Seriously stunning! You did an amazing job. :D
What wonderful job. Everything looks elegant and bright. A truly successful project, a true piece of art. Congratulations!
Erin – Wow. You are an incredible collaborator. I feel so grateful. Thank you!?
Oh, good gosh…YOU NAILED IT…ESPECIALLY, that powder room!!! Luv, Luv, Luv!!! We are definitely checking this out for a rental!!! franki
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL! A perfect blend for the home. Totally nailed it ;)
Makes me sad I missed the trip, but I am truly amazed at what a beautiful home you created long distance. Fabulous, warm, and comfortable. Does she allow pets?
No pets :(
Simply Stunnning !!! ADORE. ADORE. ADORE.!!!!!!!!
Beautiful job and well done! Especially love the room with the fireplace and the idea to wrap the coffee table in fabric, brilliant idea! I recognized those adorable fur stools in that room as well as in your book. What’s the source for them? Would love a pair for my living room!
They are from Diseno Bos, a Boston shop! Google them!
And not a moose fabric in sight! Love the house!
Absolutely breathtaking! It looks rich, layered and collected! Congrats Erin!
Outstanding! The area often produces overdone “cowboy”! Your take is fresh, but keeping to the spirit of the west!
Wow! This is stunning and this woman will be renting the hells out of this house after this post! So great.. I wish I could hire you to help me overhaul my parent’s 150 year old farmhouse on the Chesapeake Bay… we could rock it….
Best post ever….you included everything! Also, love the baby travel tips..even though I am a grandmother, I can share them with my daughter when they travel/keep up the good writing/continue to share.
Incredible job. What a great project!
Well done and fun! Great job Erin!
Thank you! ❤️
I grew up in the Jackson Hole area and I have to say, you nailed it style-wise. You kept it true to the innate rustic atmosphere, but introduced enough modern and unexpected elements to keep it interesting. It seems that most people that attempt to do “rustic style” go WAY overboard. Rustic needs to be balanced.
I’m glad you loved the area. By the way, the views never get old.
Just fabulous! What is the source for the blue/grey chest used for a bar….and the round rope mirror?
Amazing home. Especially love all the rugs. Great job.
What is the source for that amazing round mirror in the entry? I love it!
Absolutely love this! It is so in keeping with the outdoors and the West, but plays across all seasons with its textures and outdoor references. Beautiful job!
Absolutely love. Great post.
Tip for traveling with a baby – bring their car seat (buy a travel car seat bag/protector on Amazon). The car seat can be checked on the plane for FREE during the regular check in process. Load that baby (the car seat, I mean) up with all your diapers, breast pump, extra clothes, etc – and it will all get there, at the same time as you – for free.
OMG @elementsofstyle this is just amazing!
Love! Can you tell me the source of the grey and red bedding in the bunk room??? And Henry is getting even more adorable as the months go on!
Where is the blue and tan vintage rug from under the dining table???
Is that calf hair bench a Kelly Wearstler?
I’m wondering about that AMAZING shelf with the ladder shown at one end of the dining room table? Thanks!
It’s so refreshing to see unique design that is also truly beautiful. Great job! (And done remotely, too… very impressive.) I also really love the photo of you and Henry with the horses; that’s a framer for sure.
Really lovely job. So good to know interior design can be done this well long distance!
Thank you for the resources, especially loved the entry and powder room. Fabulous!
Looks like such an awesome place, Erin! Love the bunk room and junior suite, though the entire home is spectacular!
I LOVE your room with the Woods wallpaper!! I have seen that used many times but you absolutely got it right!!
Erin, DAMN. Every inch is stunning, and it’s very cool to see your take on rustic design! Whatever those people do for work is what I should be doing, because $$$$$. Would love to see a follow-up “get the look” post with some affordable, ready-made options.
The best thing? She’s a kick ass single woman who just rocks at her career. :) #whorunstheworld
Love that! Beautiful work Erin and congrats to the homeowner on a gorgeous, well-deserved vacation home!
Such a great house, you did a beautiful job. Amazon is great for traveling with kids and free shipping for Prime members makes getting all their needed items a breeze. As long as they carry all of your brands for formula, wipes ect.
Everything looks awesome! The rustic kitchen island – what material is the counter top?
Erin, The brilliance of designing an entire home that looks crisp and modern, and, at the same time, like it’s always been there , is impressive enough, but to have pulled that off long distance is sheer genius! I’m so glad you got to see it and stay there in person!
A testament to how talented you are! You nailed it.
You are so talented. This is gorgeous! And Henry is turning into such a little man!!
House looks really great! We just took a big family road trip in June to South Dakota and Wyoming, but had to cut it short just before Jackson, Grand Teton and Montana. Now I’m even more depressed about that! :( I’m glad to live vicariously through you though!
Worth waiting for. Amazing house and view.
