Jackson Hole: Our Trip & Project

One of our all time favorite clients (whose Boston home is in EOS the book) surprised us a year or so ago when she told us she was building an awesome vacation home in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and asked us if we could remotely decorate the space.  We immediately said “hell  yes” and got to helping her!  Last week I took my family out to stay there for a few days and not only see the project in person, but explore a part of the country I had never seen.  Traveling that far with Henry was a bit stressful, but he was a champ and we did lots of things to try to make it as enjoyable for him (and therefore us) as possible.  More on that after we take a peek at the house!

Moccasin Chute Lodge is within a new development called Shooting Star at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain and Teton Village (and is available for rent all year-see more info HERE).  It’s a large, modern log cabin-y style home with stunning views of the Jackson Hole slopes with enough room for a large family trip.  We wanted to embrace the style found commonly in this area, but make sure it was still modern and anything but kitschy and certainly family friendly.

In the entry we wallpapered one wall with Nobilis’ wood grain paper (the same on I used it Henry’s closet- clearly a fave of mine).  This added the natural texture I wanted and created a “moment” when you step into the house.  A large round mirror on rope anchors the wall and is flanked by antique dog prints found on Etsy we had custom framed (the owner is a big time dog lover like we are!). A cool lucite and hide bench is perfection here as is the marble and wood side table from Anthropologie.  Topped with a jug vase from Terrain and faux branches (this is a part time home so we need greenery that won’t die) the space gets a little life.  I wanted something truly funky and cool on the ceiling so we went with this Kelly Wearstler fixture that fits perfectly.  A vintage rug from the owner’s mother adds some color and a vintage vibe while the modern leather woven baskets (I am obsessed with these) give a place to toss scarves and mittens in the winter or hiking sticks in the summer.

The kitchen is a mix of rustic beams, grey stained wood and topped off with a barnwood island

We found this vintage runner at Brimfield and it fits so perfectly in size and color!

Some modern molded barstools that are easy to clean were added to the island for seating.  We didn’t want everything to be rustic, but also nothing too precious,  and these are an unexpected twist in a mountain home.

Off the kitchen is the great room with a huge stone fireplace and cozy seating area comprised of a large linen sofa, custom coffee table wrapped in a Ralph Lauren stripe fabric atop a wool sisal rug.

We made this gorgeous throw blanket to cover the sofa (dogs, renters, kids- you know) from another Ralph Lauren wool fabric and paired it with some custom blue pillows and faux fur accents.

This was taken int he winter before everything was installed, but gives you a sense of the incredible open space!

The dining area is one of my favorite parts- not only because of the incredible artwork by Nine Francois, but also the drop dead gorgeous vintage rug we found with the perfect tones of tan and blue. I wanted to roll all over it in glee when I finally got to see it in person! A giant table from RH can seat 12 with simple Windsor side chairs and slipcovered end chairs.

This buffet from RH was perfect in style but also in it’s massive size (if you ever wonder who can buy the ginormous pieces they have- THIS is the kind of house they work in!)

This cool trunk style piece serves as a bar with vintage antlers we found at Brimfield and a vintage wood basket sourced from Ramble Market. (Ignore the jet lagged, just woke up self in the mirror.)

The powder room was the perfect sot for us to use Phillip Jeffries studded grasscloth, don’t you think?

The master suite is awesome, again this pic taken before accessories were in but it shows the space nicely. A custom Gates bed from Kristin Drohan anchors the room with yummy layered rugs, linen bedding and the world’s most comfy chaise.

We used this massive (5″ wide!) embroidered and beaded Mary McDonald Trim on the window treatments and it’s AWESOME.

The master bath is ginormous and painted F&B’s Mouse’s Back.

We turned what was supposed to be a library into another guest room, complete with a handmade barnwood headboard sourced on Etsy and a great Slim Aarons print of skiiers from OKL.  The room is painted F&B Hague Blue.

The door to this room is an amazing sliding barn door. Love.

What might be my favorite room- the bunk room!  Beds are all from RH and we evenfit in two platform beds under the windows so the room sleeps six!  A combination of camp blankets, linen, jute, hide and ticking stripe sheets- this room screams western style!

Each sleeping space has it’s own little brass reading light from Schoolhouse Electric too :)

We framed vintage bandanas for wall decor.

Ok, maybe this one is my favorite- the junior master suite. So hard to pick! I truly am delighted with how this whole house came out despite never seeing it in person until now!  This home seemed like the PERFECT spot for Cole & Sons Woods wallpaper, just behind the bed (which is an adorable Ethan Allen one).  I realize that tiny skull looks silly- we’re still looking for the right pieve for above the bed and someone hung that as a placeholder :)

A custom Petern Dunham bolster pillow adds a pop of color and the West Elm rug layered over the wall to wall makes for a cozy feel.

Room details- an incredible chest from Wisteria and feather prints from Jayson Home.

But we spent most of the time outside!  My brother bought me (Andrew) a hiking pack (this one if interested) for Henry for my birthday and he loved it and it made it easy to bring him to out of the way places a stroller can’t reach!

We took Henry to Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park and took a boat ride and hike which was so much fun.

We also took the gondola from Teton Village up to the peak and had waffles on top of the world!  Then took the smaller gondola up to a cool bar/ restaurant called Piste for evening cocktails overlooking the Tetons!  There is so much to do with kids in Teton Village (albeit slightly older ones than Henry) it really is  a great family destination.

Henry also got to see horses for the first time :)

One of my favorite spots in the town of Jackson was Persephone Bakery.  The design was spot on but so was the coffee!

Loved this little butter painting in a nook there (and the marble topped cafe tables).

One of the best things we did was rent baby gear through Jackson Hole Baby Gear so we didn’t have to bring it but Henry had everything to keep him entertained and comfy- a crib, high chair, jumperoo and walker. Our rental car place rented us a car seat too. In most major travel destinations you can find places like this which makes flying SOOOOO much easier – the only thing we brought was our stroller (which is now missing a piece thanks to the airlines, but next time we will buy the travel bag and use that to ensure no accessories or small parts get lost when gate checking).  I also shipped a box ahead of time with diapers, wipes, formula, food and other essentials I didn’t want to have to lug on the plane.  Moccassin Chute has a property manager to help coordinate all of this, and most hotels will help with this too.  Traveling with kids is NOT easy, so taking these extra steps really made it less stressful.

Henry is thoroughly depressed that his Jumperoo at home does not have this view!  Of course, we both now have colds, but the trip was worth it! I highly recommend you check it out and consider renting the house we designed if you go!
