It sure didn’t FEEL like the Oscars, did it? Not much of a red carpet as very few people actually went beyond the nominees and a few presenters – so there isn’t a whole lot to review (also see my Stories today to hear why I can’t do the standard Red Carpet Review on here anymore).
Basically, I didn’t love anyone (see roundup here). Amanda Seyfried looked best of anyone. I was not a huge fan of all the midriff cutouts on Carrie Mulligan, Vanessa Kirby, Zendaya, Andra Day, etc. Regina King’s wings were a bit too costume-y for me. Reese’s dress was a really pretty color combo but not a great cut. Halle Berry’s bow was MASSIVE (very Devil Wears Prada) and I wasn’t a fan of the hair either. Looked a little Ramona Quimby Age 8.
So instead I’m going to post the dresses I wish people had worn! :)
Christian Dior for Maria Bakalova
Carolina Herrera for Vanessa Kirby
A little Ellie Saab leopard for Zendaya
Naeem Khan for Glen Close
Badgley Mischka for Laura Dern
Amanda Seyfried in Zuhair Murad (with the skirt lined in nude and the same hair/ makeup she had!)
Valentino for Chloe Zhao
Ellie Saab for Carey Mulligan
Jenny Packham for Isla Fisher
Badgley Mischka for Viola Davis
Halle Berry in a full length gown version of this Christian Dior.
Naeem Khan for Margot Robbie
Pamella Roland for Audra Day
This Marchesa would have been so pretty on Regina King
or this Badgley Mischka
I live for your red carpet reviews. Sad that you can’t post actress/actor pics anymore, but you are crushing it as usual with these recommendations!
Love this post !! Sooo good ! I agree with the other comments that your other “calling'” is that of a STYLIST !!
you are so spot on!!! These dresses are way more gorgeous than those on the Red Carpet this year. Someone should hire you as their stylist!
You are better than any stylist – every time you do this! If the decorating thing doesn’t work out…lol
I rated zendaya as #1 but girlfriend needed a good trim on that hair.
PS. And hers was the only age-appropriate bare midriff.
Forgot to shout out Margo Robbie.
Your red carpet reviews are some of my very favorite posts, but this is a great compromise. You have the best eye for what would have been the perfect option!
You nailed it! I felt like most of the dresses were nice, but I’d love a bit more of that old Hollywood dramatic flair. I feel like the guys stepped up their game a bit more this year though.
Ramona Quimby- OMG. SPOT ON!!!
Erin, you should have been the stylist to the stars because your dresses are perfect for each woman.
NOW…THAT WAS REAL!! STUNNING!! Dare I say, FUN!! Thanks for ALL the thought, talent, etc you did…it was quite the show…We WIN!! franki
Wow Erin!! this is eye candy!! I am hiring you as a stylist the day my girls get married. I am going to start saving from now. Absolutely AMAZING!!
Ooph, I love this post. These gowns are honestly what they should have worn.
Endorse all of these choices, but one! Looking at these gorgeous dresses, I cannot understand most of the choices made last night. I love this feature and you are so talented — sure you don’t want to be a stylist?! The only choice I don’t agree with was Chloe Zhao. I thought she looked perfect last night. She is not an actress — she is a director. Good for her for staying true to herself. Believe me, if I ever went to an awards ceremony, I would wear a ballgown and avail myself of a glam squad. But women should be free to make the choice to wear what is comfortable and true to themselves.
I have been following you for years and LOVE these posts! You have such a gift for this 👏Your picks are always so much better &I cannot believe you have not been asked to do this for real ! That leopard dress was 🔥
For those of us who dint watch it would have been great to put what they wore next to your beautiful suggestions.
Each and every dress you picked was fabulous and that you know all the actresses is even more amazing!
Unfortunately, Erin can’t post photos anymore of the actresses in their dresses anymore due to copyright/legal reasons. Which is a bummer, because you are right, it would be cool to see.
I couldn’t agree more with your take on the dresses….on all accounts! Thanks for the suggested attire. Let’s hope for next year.
wonderful job as always. i didn’t even watch it – i forgot it was on! honestly, i’m over hollywood these days
Love your picks. Spot on!!!
I wholeheartedly agree you def have a gift for this. well done!!
Thank you so much! I think your recaps are wonderful and I would have missed seeing your impeccable choices.
Spot on as always! Your picks are beautiful. Can’t stomach watching the Oscars anymore- guess I’m getting old but I did see red carpet photos- mostly abysmal. I didn’t think Halle Berry was capable of looking that bad- that hair, that color- horrid!
I agree, you are a wonderful interior designer BUT you are a fabulous high fashion stylist. Most importantly, you know what looks good on a person.
Dear Mrs. Gates, I do declare you have exceptional taste … stunning selections and fashion matches, a joy to read, view and be inspired by. Thank you :)
Oh, do I agree with everyone…your picks are stunning and elegant. The Romona Quimby comment was spot on! You have multiple talents, my dear. Great eye for style, a way with words and a great sense of humor.
Thank you once again.
Agree all your suggestions are MUCH better although I did like Carey Mulligan’s gown.
It’s time to become a stylist!
Way better than the choices made by their stylists.
Ramona Quimby age 8!!! 💀💀💀 I saw a tweet that guessed her hairstylist was Rita Wilson’s makeup artist from last year who didn’t show 😂
Love your blog and always love these post Oscar reviews. Can’t believe it’s ending! Regardless- gorgeous picks!
Ohhhh how I love the formal wear you choose. Such a pro, care for a second job? Kidding 🤭 The Marchesa……⚰️ You missed a dress for Reese…..gah, I hated the belt. It was like lashing a piece of leather. Dress sucked too IMO. The lilac belted number for Margot, now that’s a belt 💕I also hated Audre Day’s 80’s hooker dress ( and she is my fav, did everyone see her movie? Billie Holliday? Swoon, so good❣️) I am not a fan of the green dress you chose for her. I fucking hated Halle’s complete look, what a miss. The hair 🤮Your chose for her is stunning. The Ellie Saab dress knows a belt too, so beautiful. I would like to know how you know about formal wear?
You should be getting paid the big bucks to style all of the celebrity women. The gowns you shared are gorgeous. Great picks.
My girlfriends and I look forward to, and greatly enjoy your style posts! You find THE most amazing gowns and I cant believe they dont hire you to style the whole event!! Your taste if off the charts and spot on!
Loved all your picks. I did love a few dresses; Amanda’s dress was a WOW! Loved Carey Mulligan’s gold dress. But many would have looked even more stunning in your picks.
I understand you can’t post the original photos due to new rules. And I very much appreciate you still managing a red carpet in your own way. Brilliant work around.
I appreciate your blog all the time and I should say so more often. Thank you!

Phenomenal picks. Couldn’t agree more. The animal print gown!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The green suggestion for Andra Day would have slayed. By the way, I am so annoyed that Andra Day didn’t win. I watched both films and while Frances McDormand was great, Andra Day was off the charts.
You have a real gift for this, Erin! WOW! This picks would have been SO MUCH BETTER than the ones the stars and stylists made this year. Thanks for sharing your genius~Anne
