Classic But Cool Exterior Color Palettes
Painting your house is not only incredibly costly, but it’s intimidating too! It’s a huge commitment and one that you will see every, single day. So today I wanted to share some palettes (along with accessories) for those of you considering a summer project of changing the color of your home. I chose a few different architectural styles as examples, because your paint palette should coordinate with the style of your home. That said, if you are sick of your brown Tudor- you absolutely CAN paint it white, as shown below! :)

We painted our house Knoxville Gray a few years ago. I LOVE it. We also went with a white-ish trim, but kept our dark red door from our previous paint job.
Thanks for maybe giving me my house colors. We have a 1970’s colonial and I want to paint it light gray with white trim and a blue/aqua door…
This is so helpful. We just moved into an older house in Waban (built in 1905). It’s color is somewhere between burgundy/pink depending on the light. Needless to stay we are eager to repaint, but it’s a huge expense and we don’t have alignment on the color at this point. This was great inspiration.
Well, I’m “shaking, quivering, etc.) the “crew” arrives on 7/1/2019 to solid stain our log cabin. It has been “driftwood gray” for 35 years..tree surrounded on a lake….with slate roof, wine painted windows, cupola and antique metallic bronze doors. It’s going…slate gray with black windows…keeping the cupola and doors. It will be much darker and I’m really afraid of the undertones…but…here goes….franki
Great post Erin! my home looks almost identical to the farmhouse, and we recently finished painting it the white dove- turned out so great!
Last year we painted our red brick white and lost the black shutters – an amazing transformation! Used SW Greek Villa on your recommendation. It is the perfect outdoor white. Thank you!
What about Spanish? Help!
What if you have unpainted brick? Should it be painted? I don’t love the look of my brick but I do love how low maintenance it is. I’m wondering if a German Schmear would time dow it’s brickiness in a low maintenance way. Thoughts? It’s a Beacon Hill townhouse. The neighbor on one side painted the neighbor on the other side has not.
I do love the German Schmear look– a lot! IN Beacon Hill would look fab with a high gloss black door and shutters and white trim!
Omg this could not have been better timed. I came to your blog to procrastinate sending my painters my exterior paint selections for a brick Colonial flip house. I’ve been basing my plan on the exact inspiration house you shared, but have been obsessively second guessing (per usual.) Thank you for giving me the confirmation I needed!

We just painted our big Colonial with a gambrel roof. It’s always been a weird blue/gray (we didn’t pick the color) and it faded to mauve. Definitely not the look we were going for! I chose Benjamin Moore CW Brush Blue, trim is Simply White, and door is HC Stratton Blue. Gorgeous black sconces, and white shutters with black hardware. I am obsessed and my heart still skips a beat every time I pull into my driveway. :-)

For French Country I’d also probably do something similar to what I show for the Colonial- the white with greige shutters and door!

Love it and also needed it today. Hoping commenter peanut gallery may be willing to chime in on our sitch: we’re adding a front porch/back addition to a plain brick colonial and want to take it a little more modern. Rather than going white, thinking of going darker (not black, maybe mid-deep tone gray/green/blue) on painted brick (porch will be white. Any ideas on colors?? Black or white windows? Ugh, I’m so paralyzed by choice. See @livingonlivingston on insta for the “before.”
