Hi guys- our nanny is sick today so I have about 1.5 minutes before Henry likely starts jumping off furniture in the other room or drawing on the walls, so this is going to be a quick post today!
However, I wanted to share that I will be doing a great panel at Designer Bath September 25th in which we’ll be discussing how to update your home in simple ways without major renovations. Click here to register for this free event. Come say hi and hear from myself and other great panelists and see the gorgeous new Designer Bath showroom.
Hope to see some of you there! Ok, back to toddler wrangling!
Wish I could attend the event. Hope you will share the content of event on the blog as well as photos.
I think what your mother is talking about is setting limits. I see children just allowed to howl at the top of their lungs in the grocery and the mother continues her grocery shopping. Never tells the child what proper societal norms are. This is to the detriment of the child. Also, scheduling children for the entire day, every day never allows them to be bored, so they don’t know what to do with themselves. When both parents work (which I know is the norm) they are desperate for their parents attention and parents feel guilty about disciplining their kids when the time they spend with them is limited. Jordan Peterson Rules for Life #5, Don’t let your children do anything that makes you dislike them.
How is it that toddler life is different today? My friends and I all struggle with “wrangling” (hahaha!) and if we don’t have everything coordinated throughout the day from preschool to nanny to supervised activity, things fall apart FAST. Yet my mother reminds me every five seconds this was not how my brother and I were raised. We – and our friends too, I think – were raised to BEHAVE (her inflection). She tries to enforce that during grandparent time and it always results in unhappiness on everyone’s end – hers because my child “is not being brought up properly”, my child and of course, me! So what is so darn different today?!?
Dear Kate
It is called selective memory. According to the stories of my mum my sister and I must have been the best behaved children on earth. I am convinced she does not remember the many times she pulled our ears or hair or dragged us by the elbow , when we didn’t listen.
Just don’t forget the toddler wrangling phase is short in relation to a life ;-)
Barbara (mom of teenage twins and a toddler)
It’s not. Kids are kids. They probably just don’t remember (or remember selectively).
Erin, do you have a product that you recommend for cleaning stone (marble)?
Wish I were local also … at least to attend the event. I’ve done my share of boy wrangling (Henry is a big boy now) and wish you luck!
This looks like such a fun event! I wish I was local to attend!
