Everyone loves a good capsule wardrobe – at least in theory, right? Last night as I was getting ready to go out I was looking through my (way too full) coat closet and still could not find the right coat for my outfit. I really needed a short black faux fur type situation, and I don’t have one. It got me thinking about essential outerwear – and if I were to create a closet from scratch of “must haves” (not including sports-specific outerwear) I think this would be it! What other types of capsule wardrobe roundups would you like to see?
- The classic trench. A no brainer and must have.
- A black puffer coat for winter – this one fits awesome and is made of down alternative.
- A colorful statement coat- blue, red, pink – whatever, I love this blue tone. Also this one I saw in person.
- OMG I wear this faux leather puffer TO DEATH. And it’s on sale right now! I may also need it in black.
- An animal print coat – faux fur or other material. #leopardisaneutral (I am obsessed with this but way too $$$)
- A real or faux leather jacket, this one has a more blazer style, this one is a classic biker jacket.
- As mentioned above, a cropped furry black coat for “going out” (p.s did you see this article??)
- A teddy coat in a classic neutral.
- A tailored, fancier camel wool coat for dressier occasions or work.
- A textured sherpa vest – great weekend topper.
- An olive quilted field jacket. Another fall staple.
- A denim jacket – always.
Coat obsessed, over here. Midwest fall/winters/spring mean you will literally wear every kind of jacket. My favorites: a cozy teddy; a legit cold-weather down jacket for freezing/negative temps; a lighter down jacket (both to the knee, with hoods, preferably with thumb holes to keep close fit); “mixed media” jacket – part sweater/trench/light down/etc. – whatever your preference; a shacket (Madewell has an awesome Isabel Marant dupe on sale); a long belted day-to-night pretty coat (love Ulla’s tiger print from this season); houndstooth print in blazer or any style you prefer; a fleece (there are great options now); and a fun faux fur. I have been on the hunt for a great faux fur gilet – haven’t found the right one yet. Love your fashion posts.
Handbags and jewelry.
Great post! I also needed a short, black faux fur jacket. I ordered several and returned all of them. I finally ordered one from Kohl’s! and LOVE it. It’s light-weight in case you need something heavier.
Handbags! And jewelry.
Great post, thank you! All must haves for a functional closet – shoes (agree with Kelly), pants, dresses, shirts/sweaters/blazers, accessories
As a coataholic, I have every style you shared (and more!) except I am not a fan of large animal print in a coat. I love the look of a fitted coat dress, a la Kate Middletown, so polished. I treat myself to coats to get through miserable midwestern winters! A tip- I have found that high end consignment shops are great places to find furs (scored a short brown mink jacket in amazing condition for $100). Donna Salyers faux furs is a great store with online buying options.
I have the entire bottom row. Along with assorted others. In our climate, hoods are a must. No one bothers with umbrellas. I WISH I had a leopard print coat or jacket. Maybe someday I’ll find just the perfect one. My colorful statement coat is wearing out and needs replacement. Hard to find another as perfect.
Yes, multiple coats and jackets are a requirement, along with waterproof shoes or boots for winter wetness.
Shoes!
Thanks you!
