Fashion Friday: The Staple Trench
Just a quick Fashion Friday today as I’m not only on a family trip but also am feeling a smidge burnt out this week. I have long been pondering a splurge/investment of a Burberry trench coat. I’ve had other versions that have been nice but not QUITE the timeless quality of Burberry. And the trench is something that will not only never go out of style, but is a piece that can last you a lifetime.
You can dress a trench up or down- it looks great both with jeans and a tee as well as a topper over a dress. And sleeveless versions are great for layering or wearing alone as a dress (a la Meghan Markle).

I too am a Burberry fan and own a winter coat. However, I recently read that they actually burn their remaining stock at end of season to not dilute their brand . The $$ amount was staggering. If true, it’s soured me on the brand

I had a hard time justifying the Burberry coat as well so I gave a picture to my husband and said it was on my wish list – and a year or two later it showed up under the Christmas tree. I LOVE it. Goes with everything and has a nice medium weight. He also bought direct from Burberry and I would recommend that as well. I agree with others that it has a very slim fit. I am tiny on top and normally wear a size 2 or 4, but Burberry recommended to him to get a 6 and that was the right call.

Agree with the comments above! My “classic” Burberry trench is so slim fitting today that I rarely reach for it anymore. Also recommend black vs camel, bit edgier, still chic.
For the first time ever I’m drawn towards the lower cost items. I have 2 already, but can you ever truly have enough of something so classic?
Very timely post! I’ve been doing research on this too! A trench is at the top of my “needs” list!! I bought the JCrew trench shown thinking it was going to be perfection. Alas, it was not for me. The fit was odd (and I’m a JCrew junkie, most things from there fit me well) and the top buttons started way too low for my taste (something I never had thought about until I tried it on). That’s when I realized I needed to look at other options.
The classic Burberry would be dreamy, but I have a hard time justifying the price for something I’m actually going to use a lot, putting it on the back of a chair at a restaurant for the ends to be stepped on, tossing in the back of the car, wearing with a dark leather purse that may transfer color. (Though Elizabeth’s comment above is swaying me…)
My current favorite is the Brooks Brothers Trench, NOT the one pictured (which is from their less expensive line and is NOT water resistant – that’s a deal breaker for me) but the $598 “Double-Breasted Trench Coat”. I tried one on in the store and it felt perfect. It even has a zip out liner making it more versatile (living in NC we get all the seasons).
I do hope I don’t regret not splurging. Maybe it would help if I kept the $1200 cash I saved in the breast pocket as a reminder. :)

I made the Burberry splurge a couple years ago and regret nothing, but if you’re going to do this, here’s my advice: 1. Yes, it will last you a lifetime and never go out of style, but the classic Kensington is a pretty slim fit, so if you are someone whose weight yo-yos, planning on having more kids, etc. don’t do it. It’s only useful if it fits. 2. Buy it direct from Burberry (preferably in the UK if you are planning a trip–the exchange rate is very much in your favor) and if it needs to be altered (I am super petite, so mine did), they actually deconstruct the coat so it’s perfect. Nordstrom, etc. will do alterations, but it won’t be the same. Also, if you buy from Burberry, they literally roll out the red carpet and you feel like a princess. This costs nothing extra and for me, it was a once in a lifetime experience, so I wanted it to the be good.
I agree with Elizabeth on sizing and buying directly from Burberry for all the reasons she stated above. The coats are all cut quite slim, so I recommend trying on with layers underneath so it works well with various outfits.
I would also recommend going with a darker color. I have a very light colored Burberry trench with a pleated skirt and while it is beautiful, it shows every tiny bit of anything that may get on it. I have found a dry cleaner who made it look good as new, but I am almost afraid to wear it as often as I should because it is so easy to get dirty. I live in NYC, so rain splatter, etc are a real problem! This may not be an issue for those not in a crowded city.
