LINDSEY’S FRONT DOOR MAKEOVER
Hi readers! While we put the finishing touches on our kitchen (so close, I promise!) I am excited to share with you a mini-makeover of our front door. When Eric and I bought our house last summer the exterior doors were in rough shape. Even though we were in the middle of what felt like 100 other projects I made it a priority to swap them out and I’m so glad that we did. Kwikset had contacted us about partially sponsoring the project so we started planning using their Arlington line as inspiration. Here’s what we came up with:
I knew from the start that I wanted the doors to be a dark navy because I thought it would play nice with our current greenish-gray exterior, but also transition easily when we paint the house a different color this summer. Plus, navy is classic and pretty much the best color ever. Here’s a quick before pic:
I can’t wait to re-paint all of the super creamy trim and re-do the stairs/walkway, but those projects have to wait for another day. In the short term we were focused on replacing the door and addressing the small details (lighting, hardware, etc.) to spruce it up a bit. You can’t tell from this photo, but behind the storm door was a flat, hollow door that had been painted bright magenta at one time or another. It wasn’t pretty and it didn’t function well either. Fast forward a bit and here’s what it looks like now:
We purchased the doors at our local lumber yard and chose to paint them Benjamin Moore Blue Note (high-gloss). I love how the color looks against Kwikset’s antique brass finish.

Even though we weren’t able to use the awesome hexagon door knocker I originally had my eye on (finish was off – it was more orange than brass) I am pretty happy with how everything turned out! Besides painting and replacing the doors (not the easiest task to take on during the winter) these updates were quick and affordable, but still a big improvement from what we started with. We are embarking on similar project– what do you do about storm door??? Get rid of it? Get a better regular door? I was thinking of painting storm door to match…
Hi Mandy! Because our doors are protected by overhangs (and we face a busier street so we only need a screen option on the back door) we decided to get rid of the storms. I haven’t painted storm doors before but I’m sure you can!

Thanks! Sara is correct – they are boxwoods. As the weather gets nicer I will probably try to plant them and swap out the planters with something more summery.
