As I’ve mentioned before, after seeing the pictures of my house non-stop after book one, I’ve been dying to update some spaces in my house to give them new life. The guest room was the easiest to start with since I loved the big pieces of furniture still (bed from Crate & Barrel, old WS Home nightstands I painted white (similar here), the Bling flushmount fixture and Hudson Valley sconces, white silk drapes and IKEA dresser I hacked with big brass pulls. ) So I started with a color scheme of light greenish-grey (lightening the walls using Farrow & Ball’s new color Cromarty– LOVE) and warm darker grey. I also knew I wanted it to be a little more traditional as I’ve been feeling more in tune with my classic New England roots these days. As you recall, this was the guest room before, and this is it today:
I started with new bedding and the kind folks at Crane & Canopy reached out to see if I wanted to give their wares a try, which I did after hearding so much about them online. I picked out the Linden duvet cover, king shams, euro shams (king beds should have three across the back!) and the scalloped sheet set (all items available in other great colors and lots of other simple but great styles too.) The quality of the sheeting ( a silky soft 400 thread count) is SO luxurious and beautiful, I adore it and find it to be such great value for the price. I layered a chevron quilt ( I also love this one) because I think guests should always have options when it comes to the level of warmth they like. Also, for those who prefer no top sheet (Andrew looks at me like I punched him in the gut whenever I make the bed with a top sheet- he HATES them) they sell sheet sets with NO TOP SHEET! GENIUS!!!!
Also genius- the shams and duvet have ZIPPERS! So much cleaner and neater than envelope folds and buttons and makes changing the duvet cover less of a teeth-grindingly awful task! Why doesn’t everyone do this??
I sent my king shams to Cece duPraz to have them monogrammed in a matching threat in their Frances monogram. It adds so much to put a custom detail like this on your sheets and I love that you can send any bedding to them to be monogrammed like this! For the pillow I had one made from a Duralee fabric and cording (Crane & Canopy has some great options too for those who don’t want to go the custom route). The faux fur throw adds some warmth to the foot of the bed too.
As you know, I sold my chinoiserie panels and found these amazing etchings of flowers at Brimfield Antique Fair this fall. I sent them into Frambridge and had them float matted to show off the deckled edges of the paper and used their Richmond frame. They came out SO AMAZING! I love how the gold frames look against the cooler toned wall and play off the vintage mirror above the bed. The striped textile I hung on the headboard is a vintage African blanket I also found at Brimfield (Andrew saw it and said “why is there a dirty dishtowel on the bed?” HA! Men. Also note the mixed metals- totally okay to do!
Float matting is such a great option to use and gives art a slightly modern look. We’ve been using Framebridge a lot in our work (and personally) and I recommend it highly.
I also sold the painting I had done and replaced it with this work by Nell Waters Bernegger, a print on canvas from One Kings Lane. The candelabra is by Dunes & Duchess and the vase is a vintage find (similar here).
I layered a gorgeous Loloi rug I already had over a custom sized Pottery Barn sisal (I also already had- fantastic for layering) to give the room more texture and warmth.
I also layered woven woods under the drapes for a more cozy feel (and better light blockage). These are fabulous cordless (safety first, people) woven woods from Select Blinds in the Bali Natural (currently buy 3 get one free PLUS 45% off!)
A bad iPhone shot of the room looking from the doorway- I used an old West Elm bookcase (used to be in Andrew’s office that is now our master bath- my how far we’ve come!) We also got a new foam mattress for the room from Hyphen and it’s awesome- guests have loved it. A great mix of support and softness without that horrid memory foam smell! You can get 10% off your own Hyphen mattress with code ElementsOfStyle!

Too cute!! I love this :)

Gorgeous, gorgeous, retreat-like space, Erin! And oh my God, the top sheet conundrum!! My husband and I have been fighting about the top sheet for years! I finally caved and tried it without last week. Not quite sold, but maybe some of these sheets will help; )
What is the secret to getting your bedding so crisp? I iron my sheets and they still look sloppy! Beautitful redo. Original was lovely but this one is elegant and subtle. Love it.
This is absolutely beautiful, Erin! I love the soft colors, the new artwork, the luxurious bedding — everything. Looks like the bed should be moved over to the right just a little, though, so it will be perfectly centered beneath the mirror — and equidistant between the two sets of framed prints. Anyway, your newly refreshed guest room is as elegant and inviting as can be. Thank you so much for sharing the stunning update with all of us. Such a treat! :)
P.S. Totally agree with Andrew on the subject of flat sheets — we never use them.
Whenever I see rooms styled like this it quickly reminds me the difference beteeen a professional and Instagram one minute wonders. This is stunning
I have had a lot of issues with my Crane & Canopy bedding. Although they are gorgeous and very soft, all of the zippers have broken in the wash even though I followed the care directions and the company won’t refund past 30 days. Very disappointing! Beautiful bed though :)
How funny about the top sheet- I’ve never given it a thought, so now of course it’s making me question everything! This is such a lovely update (although the “before” was equally stunning), I’m sure you have to kick guests out ;)
Love the new look Erin! I’ve trolled your old posts in the past for the resources for those BIG BRASS PULLS but couldn’t find. Please let us know what you can about them and where to purchase!
Thank you!
Big fan from the ‘burbs. L
I love it! The wall color is so soothing, and the throw pillow on the bed ties in that greenish-gray so perfectly. What a beautiful and welcoming space. Great job!
I love how you transformed this bedroom! I am definitely inspired!
What a treat for your guests!! (I sleep in our guest room, occasionally, just to “feel” it.) I, too, luv the Loloi rug and placed one over my IKEA Stockholm rug…what a difference and nice “change.” Just a fantastic look!! franki
Looks fantastic, well done! What is the greenery used in the vintage vase on the dresser? I’m looking for something like this, thanks!
Beautiful room! What an exquisite space for your guests. Question – what type of white flowering branch is in the vase in the last picture?
I love your room!! Could you let me know the name of the Duralee fabric used on the accent pillow? I am redoing my master BR and trying to incorporate these same colors(my master bath has grey sinks, shower etc. and brass fixtures). I have a Sam Moore chair and ottoman and I know your pillow would coordinate perfectly with it! Thank you!!!!
Anyone else remember that sheets used to be sold as separates almost exclusively? I have no use for a top sheet, and loved when you could buy good quality fitted sheets alone. Glad to hear Crane & Canopy is reviving the practice. Not sure why it ever changed to sets-only.
I love it. I need a new duvet for our guest room and since it has your stamp of approval I’m ordering one from this company right now. I’ve seen them all over facebook but haven’t known anyone who tried one. (Not that I know you. That would be stalkerish. But I feel like I know you!)
Love- it looks very cozy! Great job!
I love this makeover! It’s so warm and inviting, but I’m not sure as a guest I would ever want to leave. I spotted an eagle convex mirror this weekend at an antique fair and was so tempted to buy it (I’ve loved this style mirror for ages), I could kick myself now especially since it was so reasonably priced at $40.00!
Also, it’s so nice to see that you still have Ikea hacks, etc. in your home. For someone on a budget it makes me feel like it’s possible to achieve a look as elegant as yours.

Which pillows do the guests sleep on? the king sham?
I was wondering that too. Do you keep the “sleeping pillows” in a closet and take them out when guests are staying over?
Wasn’t that rug originally in the nursery? Did you switch it out for something else – curious if Loloi is worth it.
Erin, I am in LOVE with the wall color, so soothing!! You nailed it!! No surprise there!! Warm, inviting and luxurious!!
Wow! This is amazing! Love the fur throw.

Hi!! Love your work!!
Do you have any resource for the mirror – at a reasonable price?
Thanks!
Hi there, it’s a classic design, I actually saw one at an antique fair this weekend for $40.00. Many can go for crazy amounts, but there are less expensive versions in Syroco wood that would give you the same look. I found several on Etsy, just google “Eagle Convex Mirror.” Good Luck!

I second this question- I’ve been searching for some and this is perfect!
Erin, what greenery is in the vase om the bureau? Thanks!
The top sheet thing made me laugh. Every time my husband and I go to Europe the hotels have two twin duvets on the bed and no top sheet. The first time we were like “what the hell?” but we loved it so much we finally replicated it on our own bed. We each get our own duvet and the lack of a top sheet means there is no sharing anything – it’s genius! Now I only have to wash two twin duvet covers and a fitted sheet every week and we have the best sleep ever – total life changer. I admit it isn’t aesthetically pleasing as the traditional set up but the better sleep makes up for it.
I am so obsessed with Crane & Canopy! could not be happier with their bedding. I love what you did with all their pieces in your guest bedroom.
I absolutely love what you’ve done! It looked great before and I loved it in the book, but it looks even more warm and cozy now. The mix of gold and gray looks wonderful.
I freaking love Crane and Canopy! Before, my husband would often make the bed in the AM, and it looked as someone was still in it. Now, it looks complete and pulled together all the time.
Do you know the brand of the curtain?
Do you have a suggestion for a gray color without green tint?
