This Old House Renovation: Jill Goldberg

I’m back! A week off from blogging was just what I needed to get excited about sharing some cool stuff with you guys the rest of the summer. We had an overwhelming, but nice, trip to Maine and some QT with Henry which was wonderful. He’s growing faster than I can even fathom and so time away from work is crucial for me as a mom. But MAN does it feel great to be back at work! :) I have a new accessory collection launching this week, a re-branding effort underway and a new renovation project starting at my house in August- so lots and lots going on!
To kick off the week I wanted to share with you this incredible project done by fellow Boston designer, and friend, Jill Goldberg (who owns Hudson in the South End, Boston’s best home store in my opinion!)  She was chosen to do this renovation project in conjunction with This Old House in Arlington, MA and I absolutely LOVE it and have not seen much of it on the ol’ interwebs so I thought it would be fun to share as well as some insight from Jill on the design! The clients wanted a very serene, California vibe that took cues from the style and age of the old home, and I certainly feel it was a very successful result!

This picture had me at hello- from the modern bubble chandelier by Oly (I found a more affordable one- see bottom of post) to the oak cabinetry, wall paneling, William Morris paper, modern slipcovered chairs and sculptural table….it’s an A+++ in my book (and also one of Jill’s favorite rooms for it’s timeless yet modern feel).

The butler’s pantry is through these fabulously genius panels that you can open and close- super efficient for serving food and drinks in the dining room!  Jill says this was one of her favorites aspects of the design int he house.

And the butlers pantry itself is stunning as well (more of this incredible wood cabinetry coming in the kitchen!)

Doing a wood island with wood floors can be difficult- but I adore how seamless this color palette is, keeping the floors and the island the same exact tone and then doing the white cabinetry on the perimeter.

And I always love me a good vintage rug in a  kitchen. :)  The antique details in the hardware and glass doors keep in line with the age of the home, but in such a crisp, new way.

The wood tones are carried into the family room, but make their way up onto the planked vaulted ceiling.  The limestone mantel helps to keep the color scheme consistent (an important aspect of the design of this home).

Jill wanted these rooms to all flow with an interesting mix of textures to keep it interesting.  A perfect example is this embossed wallpaper on the ceiling in foyer.  It looks as though its a detail that has always been there but it actually is new (I found some linked at the end of the post!)

With this type of paper, make sure it’s paintable and use the same shade as on your trim to make it look older and richer.

I am IN LOVE with these stairs. Like, seriously in love.

The woodwork in the living room is original to the home, and where Jill took her cues from for the newer woodwork int eh rest of the house.

A great little office with shiplap walls and ceiling.

In this space, the walls were kept the same tones as the rest of the house but the grasscloth wallcovering adds texture.  I always try to use grasscloth in projects as its such a  rich, wonderful look and since there have been such advances in vinyl grasscloth, there’s no excuse not to!

More shiplap (new tot he home, but looks old) in this small bathroom, which looks great with the cement tile flooring.

Large, dramatic art (this piece from Carroll & Sons by Richard Bosman) really looks incredible in conjunction with the more traditional details of the house.

Simplicity at its best.

A lot of the art Jill sourced on minted.com— a great place to find modern pieces at accessible prices.
