It’s the kind of book any writer wishes they could have written but is eternally grateful they couldn’t. Nina Riggs and I had a lot in common- we share a literary agent (the phenomenal Brettne Bloom), published at the same imprint (Simon & Schuster), both the mother of boys and an affinity for self-diagnosing via WebMD. She seemed like the kind of woman I would have loved to have shared a cocktail (or four) with on a sunny June night, talking about motherhood, writing, dogs, wine…anything and everything. But for some cruel reason, Nina was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer at the age of 37 and that friendship will never happen. Nina passed away last month, just shy of seeing her memoir, The Bright Hour, being published to rave reviews tomorrow June 6th. And so other authors, like me, are hoping to take on a small part of promoting this book for her, in honor of her, to make sure the brightest of lights shines on her talent.
Nina had the painful and poignant experience of writing about dying in a way that I never could have- with humor, exquisite clarity, bravery and levelheadedness. Her book is a masterpiece. I was sitting with our agent at a Manhattan bar when she got the final bid on Nina’s manuscript and got to call her and tell her the amazing news that no doubt helped alleviate some worry for her financially. She kept telling me how much I was going to love this book, how much I would love Nina, how important this book is. And she was right. About all of it. It’s hard to make sense of it, but somehow I found myself looking forward to getting into bed and reading this book about a dying mother every night. How is that possible? Because Nina made this book about LIFE really, not death. She wrote about her excruciatingly unfair diagnosis with such levity (and even laugh out loud humor) that I found it uplifting instead of soul-crushingly sad. I think that was her goal- a lofty one for sure, as how does one write about dying young in a “light” way??? But her extraordinary talent allowed her to. I saw so much of myself in her, and also qualities of the woman I hope I can become someday.
The lessons, the deep stuff- it’s all there. The reminders to value every moment of your life, even the shitty ones- that you take away for sure. But upon closing the back cover, you also take a way a feeling of boldness and light instead of despair. And looking at pictures of Nina, or reading her amazing Modern Love column that garnered so much attention, you can see it in her eyes and words- she was a woman who radiated love and positivity, even during her darkest moments.
“We are breathless, but we love the days. They are promises. They are the only way to walk from one night to the other.”
I really wish I could have met Nina. She was clearly a very special person. But I am so glad she left us all with this book, this gift, really. Especially for her two sons, who miss her with every ounce of their beings and will forever. She was a magnificent mother. And writer. And human. And you all need to read this book.
So today, I get to give away five copies (open to US residents only) of The Bright Hour thanks to Simon & Schuster. Leave a comment below and I will pick the winners randomly tomorrow morning and e-mail them directly. For all of you who do not win, you can buy the book here or pick it up at your local bookstore. Lets make The Bright Hour a rousing, NY Times Bestselling success and spread the love and light that Nina shared as far as we can.
XO,
EG
Adding this to my reading list! I survived thyroid cancers as a teen, and I remember how alone and misunderstood I felt throughout the fight. Voices like Nina’s are so, so important. I loved her Modern Love piece and can’t wait to read more.
Thanks for the recommendation!
thanks!
Thank you for recommending this book…just ordered it. While I have never directly been impacted by cancer, I am committed to doing whatever I can to raise money and awareness to help find a cure. This summer is my 10th year riding in the PMC. My bike team has two pedal partners, young children who are currently fighting cancer. As a mother of three, it’s heartwrenching, grounding and inspiring. We need to find a cure.
I remember my Grandma reading Tuesdays with Morrie while my Grandpa was dying of ALS – she encouraged my Grandfather and I both to read the book but as the matter was too close to home I ended up not reading it until my high school required it and by that time it had been three years since my Grandpa’s death. I bawled my bloody eyes out. This book sounds thought provoking to say the least , but hopefully not as difficult as the above mentioned story. I am very interested to see her lightness and humor brought into a miserable life experience. Thank you for sharing.
This sounds like a wonderful story. I work in oncology in a hospital and see this quite often. I’m always so impressed with those that have such a positive outlook on life even though they are battling terminal cancer. Looking forward to reading it.
Such a beautiful gift to leave behind. I look forward to reading this and sharing it. Thank you for posting this.
Wow Erin, as an 8-year survivor and member of the breast cancer club (thankfully not metastatic), this book sounds like it will hit home. My gorgeous sister-in-law, Elin Hilderbrand, is also a member of this club. Have to see if she has heard about this book… xoxo Lisa
Thank you for sharing – we all need inspiration from others to do hard things!! Can’t wait to read her story.
Can’t wait to read this book!
Thank you for sharing Erin.. I have just pre-ordered the book as it is not yet available in UK. I have however read the preview and I can tell it is really something. Thank you for sharing Nina’s book and story.
Wow. This sounds like a tremendous story. Looking forward to it!
Beautiful review of the book… sounds like a read that everyone should have on their list. Thank you for sharing.
This sounds like a wonderful book from a gifted woman. As a less-talented writer myself, I would love to read it.
Memoirs are my favorite genre; there is no writing that is more true. Thanks
I would love to read this! Wonderfully written review!!
My neighbor’s sister’s cancer has returned, this book might be helpful.

As someone recently diagnosed with breast cancer, I look forward to reading about this extraordinary woman. I am already viewing life differently, but imagine that I can learn a lot from this book. Looking for hope, inspiration, and messages of love right now. Thank you for sharing this Erin!
I added this book to my list after reading the review in Real Simple magazine. I’m looking forward to reading it.
I just put that on hold at our library! Can’t wait to read it-
Putting this on my must-read list. It sounds like a book I’ll be passing along to others. Thanks for the recommendation!
What a beautiful this must be for her sons! Based on the description it should free them to feel joy without feeling guilty about her death. I can’t wait to read it!
She sounds like a wonderful woman. My mom was diagnosed at the age of 36, thankfully she survived and is now 71. I thank God everyday for her. Looking forward to reading this book.
This looks like a wonderful book. I’m fowarding your blog post to everyone in my book club and suggesting that we read this book next month.
As the daughter of a mother who faught like a warrior when diagnosed with triple neg breast cancer I am so thankful for the recommendation. Sometimes it is the worst times in life that truly unveil what is most important. Thank you Erin.
such a lovely post, Erin, thank you for sharing
In college I was introduced to the NY Times Modern Love Column by a much admired professor and to be honest, I fell in love. I spent all of my pity “12 free” articles a month on Modern Love simply because I am enamored by love stories, I always have and always will be. As the story goes, I’ve graduated from broke college student to broke working young adult with far too many loans. Winning this book might satisfy my craving for a good story…not to mention it’ll give me the opportunity to hold off on purchasing that NYT subscription I can’t afford.
I would love to share this with a Dear Friend. Thank you Erin
With the world in a crazy state, I look forward to reading this one person’s eloquent story.
Nina’s Modern Love essay was incredibly beautiful, poignant, and brave. I must read the book. Thank you for exposing us to this amazing spirit of a woman and her book.
It is a shame that we need books like this to remind us of the fragility of our lives, but to be reminded with a book like this, that appears from your review to have humor, eloquence and life lessons, is a blessing. I look forward to reading it. Having lost my husband way too soon, I appreciate books like these that reaffirm that life is full of mystery, humor, challenges, and beauty.
I’m looking forward to reading this memoir!
I look forward to reading this book.
Sounds like an uplifting book! Thanks for the recommendation Erin :)

This sounds like an amazing book we can all benefit from. Even if we cannot relate directly. You did an excellent job recapping it.
Wow, what a review. Can’t wait to read this book!
I’d love to read this book
I have added it to my list of books to read. We can all use a happy perspective. Thanks!
I’m dealing with the loss of my husband, and would love to read (and share) this book. Thanks for recommending it, Erin.
So sorry for your loss.
A lovely tribute Erin. I look forward to reading the book.
Interested in reading this memoir.
Thanks Erin! Can’t wait to read this book.
Thanks for posting about this important topic. Two of my friends were diagnosed with breast cancer in April so I really would like to read this book.
Thanks for a beautiful post on her book. I plan to recommend this book to my book club.
Marisa
Wow – what a great tribute to someone who seems very inspirational. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for sharing Nina’s story and for the reminder to cherish every moment of every day. This book is on my reading list!
My beloved husband died — very prematurely and unexpectedly — almost six months ago, and I am trying to find ways to cope (but it hasn’t gotten easier yet). Perhaps this book will offer some perspective. Thank you for the recommendation, Erin.
I’m so sorry for your loss.
Thank you, Erin. God bless you.
Lauren, I lost my only child very suddenly 5 years ago. I have lots of helpful books if you are interested.

Sounds like a amazing read
Oh wow. I can’t wait to read this book (with wine/Kleenex no doubt).
I look forward to growing through her words and inspirational outlook on life and death .We can learn so much from each other. Thank you for sharing.
This sounds like one of those books you can’t wait to read, but really hope ends another way. Thanks for the recc!
Thank you for the book recomendation. I look forward to reading it.
Thanks, Erin. I’m looking forward to reading this important book.
Looking forward to reading this book!
One of my sweet friends from high school has MBC, diagnosed 14 years ago with breast cancer, in remission for the years and now back with a vengeance for the past four. We were carpool buds, travel together every year now, and she totally embraces LIFE and joy. Would love to read this and be ablet o share it with her.
Thanks for sharing this, Erin, and for writing so poignantly about Nina. I clicked on over to read her Modern Love piece and it was so moving…moving with a touch of levity for good measure. I laughed out loud when she was describing her husband’s laugh and ended by saying it had “unmistakably sleek midcentury lines.” Can’t wait to read her book.
I value your opinion so much. This book sounds like a must read.
I was going to skip over this post this late at night but decided to open it anyway. While I cannot relate to this story I have a friend who is currently watching her husband die of esophageal cancer, a diagnosis that seems to have no obvious reason. I have been sending her daily emails and a weekly funny card as a show of support but hospice was brought in and the in-home hospital bed arrived today so those funny cards seems so much less funny. This book seems like it would be something that will help her deal with the grief that sadly awaits her and make her feel a little less alone.
Hi Diane,
My name is Kim Sansoucy and I lost my husband to esophageal cancer a year ago, this month. My heart breaks for your friend and I’m offering support if she would want to talk in the weeks to come. You sound like a wonderful friend to her.
My 43 year old colleague and friend was diagnosed with cancer last week. The news has been devastating. Thank you for sharing about this book and for highlighting this author’s life.
Yes please
It’s been on my wishlist since setting it maybe on your Instagram? Thanks so much for sharing.
I was so moved by her column – it stuck with me for weeks. I look forward to reading her book.
Would love to read this book. She sounds like a ray of sunshine.
Thank you for this opportunity!
Thank you for sharing. If you haven’t already checked out “When Breath Becomes Air” that is another utterly beautiful book about death and dying.
I have been waiting for this book to come out! She seems like an incredible woman that lived her life with such grace. I am looking forward to reading it even though I expect it will make me feel all the feels.
I would love to read this, sounds like a true gem.
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for sharing! I would love to read this!
I’ll read this book with or without a free copy. Thanks for sharing.
I would love to read this book. I believe it could put into perspective my troubles
Looking forward to reading this book!
Sounds like an increidble read to honor an amazing woman.
Prayers for strength and courage for her sons.
Gina
Thank you for sharing her book and her legacy.
A teenage family member just received a grim diagnosis. I think many people I love could benefit from this book
What a wonderful gift to her children snd to us all who are also related by virtue of our human experience S.
Sounds like a one of a kind read . Love that you are helping spread the word. Amazing!…and thank you for posting this.
Looking forward to reading. I cried reading your tribute but it sounds inspirational. It’s hard to remember to be happy fighting your own battles when someone else’s are so much greater.
Ohh can’t wait to read this book!
Sounds like a wonderful and meaningful book
What a great tribute! I would love to read this. Cancer has unfairly shaped so many lives, including my own. I’m interested to see how she adds levity to it.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer over two years ago. I feel blessed to live here in Boston where I had amazing treatment options. After surgery, chemo and radiation I wish I could say I feel good. In fact, I feel worried and scared that this terrible disease can come back again. I am in awe of women who can write while facing life threatening illness. I pray that Nina will rest in peace and that her book is an inspiration for other women, like me, who hope for a long and healthy life.
Best of luck with your recovery!
Such a beautifully written review. I can’t wait to read it!
I look forward to reading this over the summer!
Erin, I met her dad yesterday. He is a close friend and neighbor of my cousin. And I just heard the story from him. HIs wife also died of cancer. Too much rain for one family. We have a lot in common. How wonderful of you to promote the book. She left behind two little boys. I will have a hard time reading it, but feel I must. XO
Oh wow, I loved the Modern Love piece and certainly will want to read this book!
I can’t wait to read it… whether I win it or not! I’ll pass along the name of the book to my peeps:)
It will be on the top of my list this summer.
I’ve been waiting for this book to come out!
I have a close family friend who is going thru her second round of breast cancer also at 37. This time it’s terminal and heartbreaking as she has two very young children. It’s impossible to make sense of these situations and I’m very much looking forward to this book.
Thank you for sharing Nina’s story. I’m always amazed by those who can face such adversity with grace, courage, and humor. I look forward to reading her book.
Would love to have this for my next book club!
I’d love to add to my to-read list!
Than you so much Erin, I just said goodbye to a dear friend on Friday who is 49 , who in in Hospice right now, she has so bravely fought the good fight with cancer for over 5 years, she lived life to the upmost fullest and is loved by so so many. I need to read this and will pass it on to her children if appropriate. Love , Liz
I can’t wait to read this book.
This sounds like a must read. Thanks for telling us about it. I look forward to reading it.
Thank you for sharing. I will definitely read this book.
Thank you for sharing. I’d love to read it.
Thank you for helping to share her story; I look forward to reading it
Would love to read this book
I love that others are sharing such an important story. Looking forward to reading.
Oh wow, I will definitely read this! Leaving my children behind is my greatest fear :(
Thanks for sharing!
I would love to read this! I have a close (young!) family member living with cancer and I’m reading as many memoirs about it as I can.
I’m not sure I’m brave enough to read this book. Motherhood has a way of really making you aware of just how delicate life is! But, I love that, like you said, it’s about life rather than death. If I can, I just might have to take on reading this. So gracious of you to share her book and her story.
I think even if I win I’ll buy this book for others to support Nina. I am also a mother of two boys and was getting choked up just reading your post about the book. Thanks for sharing.
I’d love to read it.
Not many people in my life know this, but my sister has a brain tumor that is currently sitting there doing nothing – but feels like a ticking time bomb to the few of us she’s shared with. Losing people you love is inevitable, and sometimes is the inverse cost of loving, right? That doesn’t make it hurt less… and so I’m constantly seeking out ways to understand and prepare myself for when that bomb goes off. And so I’d love to read this.
Thank you so, so much for sharing. What a beautiful way to use your platform to spread light.
This sounds like an incredible book -it was written by an incredible woman after-all! Would love to read it!
What an inspiring story. Thanks for sharing.
i feel like i really need to read this book at this moment in my life.
I’m scared & excited to read this book all at the same time. Thanks for sharing
Welp I just cried my eyes out! Would love a copy of Nina’s book for what sounds like a great soul uplifter !
Thanks for the beautiful write-up – I LOVED the Modern Love column. So, so, sad.
This sounds like a must read, similar to The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. Thank you for sharing this book with your readers, Erin!
This is such a beautiful summary of this book. I will definitely be reading it! I lost my father when he was 54, and as the mother of a boy, I can’t even imagine going through this. Your summary brought tears to my eyes.
A book and real life story like this makes me more aware of focusing on gratitude as much as possible. Thanks for sharing.
I’d love to read this. Thanks
I will be putting this in my Amazon cart. Even if I win I will buy it for a gift. Thanks for sharing this recommendation.
My sister has children – who thankfully are young adults now – but tomorrow we find out if the MRI shows my sister’s cancer has spread to her brain or if she’s going blind in one eye for some other hideous reason. This is the kind of book I wish I could read but am not sure I can at the moment. I don’t know if my sister could read it now, either. When you’re in the middle of it – going through grueling procedures, or watching a family member try to put a brave face on pain and grief – there really are no words to describe it. Maybe Nina found a way to do so.
I’m so sorry. I wish you and your family the best.
Thanks for recommending this book by a remarkable woman.
Hi Erin,
I look forward to and read your blog with each post. Your authenticity is always in the forefront no matter the subject as shown in today’s post. I pre-ordered the book. It’s my honor to witness Nina’s story. May her writings bring comfort to her family in time as they journey through grief.
Thank you for sharing and honoring this brave woman. It is a year ago next week that my husband/our family entered into hospice, losing him on June 21st. The ones who live with a terminal illness are the bravest of souls.
definitely going to purchase this. thank you for highlighting it, Erin.
*strongly recommended
I would love to read this book. The last book you stronly recommended, A Light Between Oceans, is now one of my all-time favorites.
Thank you for sharing.
There is nothing better than people who have a fantastic outlook on life that inspires you to be the best you. I am so happy you took the time to promote this and I can not wait to read it!
I am an Oncology nurse and I’m looking forward to reading this. Thank you
Thanks for promoting this book, sounds like a truly remarkable gift she left to both her loved ones and the world.
Sounds wonderful! Looking forward to reading this!
What a wonderful tribute. I look forward to reading.
I would love to read this book – thanks for the opportunity to win a copy!
good book = summers in New England on a warm summer night enjoying the ocean.
Thanks for sharing Erin. And congrats on your new office! I’ll stop by sometime and introduce myself.
A faithful reader,
Katie

Sounds like a beautiful story. Thanks for making us aware of it!
This sounds like an amazing book. Thanks for sharing.
What a beautiful tribute from one amazing woman to another!
Wonderful tribute – I cant wait to read this one.
My sister, who is my best friend, was diagnosed at age 45 with borderline terminal breast cancer and just completed her chemo/radiation last December. The next 2 years are critical for clear scans but she won’t be considered cancer free until 10 years. When you go through this with someone you love you truly learn to cherish every day that they are with you. I’m looking forward to reading this book – the best books make you laugh and cry. Thx for sharing your recommendation!
She must have been an amazing individual to leave behind such a legacy for her husband and children. What a gift to them and the world.
Wow, thanks for sharing. Hope to win a copy of this memoir.
I am really looking forward to reading this book! Thanks for sharing!
Great give away – look forward to reading it soon.
Lifting other women up! Love this.
Sounds amazing.
Nina was a dear friend of mine–she was everything you imagine her to be and more. A kind, generous writer, reader, friend, mother. I am so thrilled with the wonderful reviews and reception The Bright Hour is getting, everywhere. I wish the circumstances that led to her writing this beautiful book were different–wish she’d never had the reason to express all of this. I feel so fortunate to have known her, and so happy that so many others will come to know her through her words.
I’d love to read it!
This is my next book to read; I love books I can’t put down and this is sure to be one.
Erin – I don’t know if you’ll see my comment or have time to reply…would this be an appropriate book to give to a girlfriend whose husband has just gone into hospice? Since it’s not yet available, and I haven’t read it, I’m curious if it would give her support during these last days with her husband – they have a son together…if you read this & can reply, that would be great. Or if anyone else sees this & has a thought. Thank you so much, I love your blog! Best, Paula
Oh no, your poor friend :( I would think it would be a good choice to give her- a voice to make her not feel alone.
I am so looking forward to this book. Thank you for sharing your review, Erin.
As a mother and as an attorney who helps provide clients peace of mind by preparing their estate plans, this is exactly the type of book to which I find myself drawn. Thank you for such a beautiful and heartbreaking synopsis.
Sounds like a must-read. Hope I win, and I think I’ll buy a copy for my mom too. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you once again, Erin for using your platform to share something that might benefit so many. I’ve added this to the cart on Amazon and if lucky enough to win a copy would pass it forward to a friend so we could experience it together.
Looking forward to reading this book, thanks to you.
What an incredible read to look forward to. My father recently passed away from a short, but hard fought battle with cancer, and ever since his diagnosis, I have not been the same. It would be so wonderful to immerse myself into something that I can connect to and draw great inspiration from. Thank you for bringing this to my attention
I would love to read this book!
This sounds like a beautiful book. It’s along the same lines as “When Breath Becomes Air” by Paul Kalanithi (neurosurgeon diagnosed with lung cancer at the end of his residency) and “Until I Say Goodbye” by Susan Spencer-Wendel (ALS). Those memoirs are so poignant, touching, and heartbreaking. Definitely helps you remember to not take a certain mundane, boring, HEALTHY moment for granted. Definitely adding this to my to-read list.
Sounds like she was an amazing woman and left this book as a legacy to her sons.
Looking forward to reading it.
Great post! Can’t wait to read it.
This sounds inspirational. Can’t wait to read it!
What a beautiful review. I’d love to read this one!
Thanks so much for posting….I remember reading about this from you (I believe on instagram) and glad you wrote a post on it as I had forgotten the name of the book but was very interested in reading. Looking forward to reading about this beautiful soul!
So heartfelt, Erin…thank you for sharing. I would love to read this book…just a little afraid of how many tears will fall while reading.
I remember this Modern Love column and would love to read the book. I’m in the early stages of divorce and would also love a reminder of how much worse things can be, but also how to deal with difficult times with grace. Thanks for highlighting this important work.
Thanks for the beautiful post. Would love to read this book!
Thank you for such a beautiful review of the book. I would not have been interested without it, just too much heartbreak. After 4 losses in a short time it sounds like just what I need.
Thanks for sharing this book, Erin. I’ll be reading it soon, hopefully courtesy of a copy from you!
I would love to read!
A beautiful and heartfelt recommendation and review . Thank you for sharing what sounds to be a wonderful book from an extraordinary women .
I’m not even sure I could make it through this book, but I’d love to learn how best to enjoy every moment of motherhood…event the really hard ones!
What a lovely review and a sweet, short tribute to Nina. I want to read the book – I’m sure it’s not a fun read, but very beautiful and honest. Thanks for sharing this with us.
I am not a survivor of cancer, but after many rough obstacles over the past few years – I am finally realizing that I have to live life to the fullest. Life is short. This book sounds amazing and I would love the opportunity to hear her story.
So beautifully put. I cried my way through Nina’s Modern Love essay and have been anxiously awaiting June 6th. And I love anything Brettne touches …
I’ve read a couple of books written by people dying too young like Randy Pausch’s The Last Lecture. I find them inspiring on how to live with such grace alongside grief. So sorry to hear another young parent leaves her family too soon. I’m eager to read this one and pray that it’s popularity comforts those who love her.
after a year which included adopting my beautiful 2nd child, my mother’s breast cancer diagnosis, spouse’s unemployment and all the usual day to day chaos, I’ve been having a hard time catching my breath. I would love to learn from someone who puts out humor and wisdom in response to the worst life can offer.
I married a man who lost his wife to breast cancer, and they had 2 sons as well. I would love to read this book for the insight it might provide into my family’s experience. It sounds like a true gift of a book to be treasured and passed along!
I would love to read this book and share it with my friends. It sounds tough, but beautiful to read.
thank you for promoting this book
I am going to buy a copy
and also make an appointment for my annual cancer screen
thank you!
This book looks great, can’t wait to read it and pass it on to a few friends. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I would love to read it. My prayers go out to her young sons.
Looking forward to reading this, thank you for sharing.
I’d love a copy of this book, I enjoy perspective-altering entertainment — better than mind-numbing or escaping, although those are also sometimes necessary.
I would love to win this book. As a young mother with anxiety myself, I’d love to read about Nina’s life lessons.
I would love to read Nina’s book. What a tribute to her life.
Since becoming a mother, life has felt fleeting. I hope to learn from Nina’s story. She sounds like a beautiful soul.
Would love to read this! She sounds extraordinary.
Thank you for bringing attention to this important book. I would love to receive a copy in your giveaway but know that I will read it one way or another.
What a powerful read. This last year has been full of changes in my life that I have not welcomed, and while I didn’t get a medical diagnosis (thank God) basically everything else in my life has shifted. I could use some helpful perspective and uplifting words.
My dad died a week after Nina, and I attended her service the day after I got back from being with him. She was a remarkable person. I would love to give a copy as a gift to the hospice folks who helped my dad and me. Thanks for shining the light on her and the giveaway! 💗
I have had to face my own mortality so I would find this book very helpful.
I’m so glad you brought this book to everyone’s attention. Having lost my mother at a relatively young age to cancer, I so look forward to reading it.
Sounds like an amazing book
Thank you for letting us know about this book! I think one of the hardest things can be seeing the best in a day and remembering what is really important when going through a bad hour/day/month. I look forward to reading!
Looking forward to reading this book! I hope it’s just as beautiful as When Breath Becomes Air.
I cannot wait to read this book – it will be the next on my list. Thank you for shedding light on Nina’s story, and thank you, too, for all that you do for your readers!
Cannot wait to read this book!
Thank you for (again) sharing this extraordinary book. I met Nina when we were 24. She has been a part of my life through every chapter since–she and John are some of our very closest friends, and our four boys are each other’s best friends. She was part of my bedrock. Even though her being gone is the most wrong thing that has ever happened to any of us, we are all–and, I know, everyone who reads this will be–transformed by watching how she chose to live–and die. She took agency over every part of that process. She did, indeed, make good use of time. I cannot wait for the world to get to know her, because the voice of the book IS her– she really was that extraordinary. I’m so grateful for every door that opened to let The Bright Hour out into the world,
Thank you for sharing this insight into Nina’s life as a close friend.
I love your design posts (because I feel like our design styles would be friends) but I’m so glad that you wrote about this book. I’ve heard pretty awesome reviews about it but I always have a harder time pulling the trigger on books (IDK why) until I’ve heard just about everyone and their mom recommend it. Looks like I need to pop over to Amazon.
Erin, what a beautiful post. I can’t wait to read this book. My dad was recently diagnosed with cancer and even in the short period of time it has caused me to stop and really try to enjoy life and slow down….especially with him!
I would love to read this and then pass it along. I love doing that with books. I’d pass it to my cousin who’s recently been diagnosed with a head/neck cancer.
Loved this book! I was lucky enough to get an advance copy and can’t stop thinking about it. Nina seemed like a very special person who was taken from her family way too soon. Her legacy shines bright though and her voice is one we can all learn from. Thanks for posting about the book Erin!
I just came home from a funeral for a special man whose family feels 80 years of age was too young. Thank you for letting us know about this book.
I’m drawn to stories of triumph over tragedy. Would love to read
Thanks for sharing Erin. I can’t wait to read the book. As a mother of two I sometimes think of what would happen to my babies if I passed and the thought of leaving them behind without watching them grow and experiencing their ups and downs in life absolutely crushes me. It breaks my heart to picture Nina’s boys without her right now. I hope they have lots of love and support and attention in the years to come. No one can ever fill their mom’s shoes.
this book sounds like one I would love…dying is part of life and I try to remember that everyday; it makes life that much sweeter. thanks for your review.
Some days gratitude is hard. But I work at it every day, grateful for my children, my family, and the day itself. We all can use Nina’s perspective on life. I can’t wait to read it and thank you for sharing her with us.
I fell in love with Nina after reading her Modern Love column last year. I messaged her on Facebook and she responded. I too wish I could have met her and shared some drinks. I wanted to be her friend. What a loss to her family, the writing world and her real friends. I can’t wait to read her gift to us all.
I can’t wait to read this. Thank you for promoting this book, Erin.
Thanks for sharing her story. Looking forward to reading it.
She sounds like an amazing woman and I look forward to reading her story. Thanks for sharing!
i’m apprehensive to read, but so so intrigued. the book sounds beautiful.
Looking forward to reading this.
What lovely words you wrote about Nina. I am always in awe of people who can remain so positive when faced with tragedy. Thank you for bringing this book to my attention!
I am eagerly awaiting the launch of this book. Thank you for sharing and promoting an important story.
Thanks Erin. It is important to be reminded of how precious life truly is. I look forward to reading Nina’s story.
Thank you for sharing this. I look forward to reading this book.
Thanks Erin. For some reason the way you describe this book reminds me of The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch, who also made his book about LIFE & all that comes with it, not death. And I’d want to read it every night just because I learned something with each chapter. It was such a beautiful, uplifting book Coming from a man who was dying. It’s incredible. I would love to read Nina’s story too.
I’ll admit…I’m curious and a little apprehensive to read. It is something that could happen to any of us.
Sounds very similar to my cousin Terri’s blog, where she was diagnosed with Stage IV metastatic breast cancer as well. She lost her battle at age 40, leaving behind a then five year old little girl. My Mom is in the process of publishing Terri’s blog in book format and I plan to pass along this book to her as inspiration. This was Terri’s blog: https://gracefulwomanwarrior.com for anyone interested.
If you haven’t read Kelly Corrigan’s books you have to! I look forward to reading this book, too!
I’ve been looking forward to reading this ever since I saw your Instagram post about it. Thanks for sharing.
I love that you can learn so much about life and death through other’s joy and heartbreaks–developing true empathy for one another. Reading is the best. I would love a copy of this book!
Wow, this book sounds wonderful. Whether I win it, or buy it myself, I will be reading it!
Will definitely be reading this, thanks for the recommendation.
This sounds like a truly amazing read – especially for us thirty-something moms just trying to get by day to day and leave some kind of imprint on our children. I cannot wait to add this to my summer reading list! Thanks so much for sharing!
Hoping to win this for a gift! I already pre-ordered and can’t wait to read especially after reading your praise.

We all need reminders to treasure life, family, love.. Look forward to reading this book
I love that you use your blog to be a voice of so much more than design. Design seems to be your platform and your story keeps us all engaged…..thank you for always sharing. I am just one of the thousands who is
constantly thinking, “how does she do it …”
I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy.
Thanks for sharing. I cannot wait to read it for myself.
Thank you for the wonderful introduction to this book. In the recent past, I have seen two friends lose their battle with cancer. Although they each faced death from an entirely different perspective, they both showed tremendous spirit and grace. Their fight was very inspirational and instructive. I’m looking forward to the wisdom, hope and life lessons of The Bright Hour.
As a daughter of a mother that lost her battle to breast cancer, I would love to have my name drawn. The lump in my throat grew to the point of tears shooting out of my eyes as I read your post. (I have your book and your blog is the first one I look for on MWF). If my name is not drawn, I will be purchasing this book. Thank you for honoring her.
Her Modern Love column was amazing, can’t wait to read her book.
Everyone, EVERYONE, needs to read books such as this to remind us of our blessings and good fortune even in the most mundane of lives. Thank for bringing it to the light.
I know this will be a transformative read. Thanks for bringing attention to it.
As much as I love reading your blogs about design during my late morning break, this was a wonderful, even though saddening, post that hit home. Its the little reminders to never take anything for granted and to live in the now. It’s a constant practice. Thanks for the reminder this morning.
Thank you…can’t wait to read this book.
Thank you so much for sharing! I hope you draw my name, but if you don’t I will be getting this book. We all could use some inspiration and clarity these days.
Erin- thanks for sharing her story! I cannot wait to read.
Cannot wait to read, thank you for sharing.
Beautiful and inspiring… A beacon of light.
Nina sounds remarkable. Her book sounds like great perspective for the rest of us moms and women. Thanks for the chance to win a copy.
Her Modern Love column just broke my heart. I can’t wait to read this.
On Saturday I helped to bury my cousin who died from cancer. She also had a great and loving spirit–I would read this for her.
Very inspirational, such a wonderful post. I don’t have the best luck so I have already purchased, but this would make a great gift.
I had heard about this and it is certainly in my queue. I know it may sound strange, but I find books like this are very powerful as they tend to snap me back into enjoying and appreciating the moment and remind me not to dwell on the insignificant fleeting worries of the day. Thanks for bringing it to your readers’ attention!
she sounds like a very special person…can’t wait to read!
Thanks for sharing Erin, I can’t wait to read this one!!
At the top of my reading list. Thank you for sharing this important story.
I added this to my Goodreads list right after you posted about it on IG months ago! Thanks for the chance to win.
Thank you for this moving recommendation. I’m really looking forward to reading her beautiful story.
This sounds like something I need to read immediately! One of my 2017 goals is to live with intention and appreciate every season of life. Thanks so much for sharing your review – Nina sounds like a remarkable woman.
Sounds like an amazing read and even more amazing person.
It sounds like such an amazing and important book, I can’t wait to read it.
I would love to read this great story My Mom passed from the same sickness. It sounds like a wonderful read.
Looking forward to reading this book by Nina Riggs to learn more deeply from someone who walked the most difficult final mile with grace, dignity and an indomitable spirit. Sadly, her brief but bright life reminds me of the tragic loss of Amy Krouse Rosenthal. Both women left their indelible mark and we are the better for it.
Sad, but sounds like a great read.
Would love to read this book! Thanks for giving away 5 copies, that’s so generous of you!
Sounds like a book I’d like to read. Thanks for the opportunity, Erin!
Would love to read. Watched my mom pass from ALS and the amazing way she handled it with dignity and grace was really inspiring. Nina sounds a lot like my mom
A must read for the summer! I read When Breath Becomes Air, and these types of books change you, deeply affect you. Thanks for sharing this information.
Sounds like a heartbreaking book, but I’d love to read it. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for sharing Nina’s book. I wasn’t lucky enough to know Nina, although we have a breast friend in common, and the three of us were in treatment at the same time. The under-40 breast cancer crowd is a tight-knit group of women.
Hoping to pick up a copy of this book soon. Thank you so much for doing what you can to help promote what I’m sure is a wonderfully moving book.
Sounds like such a good read!
Xo,
Brittany
A healthy popsicle recipe is on my blog today!

This is definitely high on my to-read list!
I am very interested to read this book… we tend to be afraid of death and run away from thinking about it, but facing it makes our lives more meaningful.
Wow. What a pitch for this book. I could not read it fast enough now.
I’ve heard wonderful things about this book and look forward to reading it regardless if I win or not!
Your eloquent review of this book calls to mind the challenge we all face… to live a “purpose driven life” no matter how many days we have. Find our purpose, and then go forward, driven by a passion to make every day the brightest!
You make me want to read this book. Thank you.
Thank you. A friend of my son’s just his mother, another bright light gone way too soon, in a similar cruel way. I look forward to this in honor of all the lost mothers and their children.
Erin, what a beautiful and heartfelt introduction to her story. I look forward to reading this one
So well timed. I’m eager to read this wonderful work.
Looking forward to reading her wise words. Thank you for sharing Erin!
This is a must read for me! Wishing Nina’s family love and peace in these difficult times.
My daughter at age 36 just had twins, also after much difficulty and ultimately IVF. (They are adorable!) We both love to read and I think this book sounds wonderful and one that both of us would enjoy and grow from. Fun to have a mother-daughter book club of 2! It is actually not the first time I have heard some great buzz about it so I am very excited to read it.
I am excited to read this especially after such a passionate post.
I have no doubt it will be a success. I’ve been looking forward to reading this book.
This book sounds amazing! I have tears in my eyes just reading your synopsis. What a gift she gave us all.
This is on the top of my to-read list!
