The trend I’ve noticed among “influencers” (I hate that word) during the pandemic is this rampant tie dye sweatsuit trend. And guys, I will be the first to say loud and proud, I hate it. Like, REEEEEEAAALLLLYYYY hate it. I think maybe most of the gals rocking them are too young to have experienced tie dye before, so they think it’s super cool and “retro”- but if you spent many summers in the 80’s trying desperately to tie dye everything you could get your hands on only for it to come out a blotchy, muddy mess- you probably are sitting this one out. I am, FOR SURE.
There are many alternatives to this look, I mean, I’d consider a potato sack a better alternative, so it’s not a big stretch. But comfort doesn’t have to mean “trend monster” or looking sloppy, either. Below are some finds that will allow you to stay comfy but look classic and reasonably adult-like. :) From sweatsuit jumpsuits (yes, that’s a thing!) to jeggings that look like real jeans and a cute oversize top– it’s all possible.
Some personal faves here:
We survived another week! Hope you all have a nice weekend (it is the weekend, right?)
I couldn’t agree more. There is no sense in leaning in to sloppy. Ugh.
Just a side note that the Old Navy jeans in this post are AMAZING for postpartum. And possibly beyond :) Excellent find – I recommend getting in both black and denim. Hope you are well!
I didn’t realize it was a look until I read your post. I guess that shows how old/out of touch I am! 😉 I’m also completely with you on “influencer”! And I really despise when people refer to themselves as such. Gah!
A tie-dye sweatsuit is the ultimate way of saying “I’ve given up”. And that’s okay if that is where you are, just don’t try to pass it off as “fashion”
Erin, perhaps you’d prefer these WFH (Work From Home) Jammies. They look like business shirts from the chest up so you can teleconference professionally. Nobody can see your lower body on Zoom. So the rest of the ensemble is comfy loungewear. Cracks me up!

Best wishes.
You ARE getting close….oh, ny…! franki
I bought the eyelet-sleeved top at Target on a whim and I LOVE it! So glad you do too!
Hahahaha I second that.
I got such a kick out of this post, Erin! Mostly your honesty. I agree with “D”- Now, I am definitely going to show my age when I let you know I was doing the tie-dye stuff in the 60’s! And for me, short lived, since it was messy, never came out like you expected and frankly got tired of seeing it on everyone everywhere. Now I love what you chose as alternatives. Classy and timeless.
LOLZ! I feel the same way about denim jackets. The expiration date on those should be sophomore year of college!
I love a denim jacket/ got mine last year at Ann Taylor and wear it a lot. I am turning 60 – wore today with moss green jeans, a navy top and fun yellow cole haan slip ons – am i out of style? What does Erin think? I think i looked pretty chic and stylish walking around the east side of providence.
Perfect post! I hate the tie dye look too. I love that you own who you are instead of posting what others do. It’s why your content remains fresh and your voice. xo
Love your grown-up style and unapologetic attitude!
Maybe people are just trying to have fun because everything is awful and you can only bake so much bread?
I was SHOOK when I saw that picture on your Instagram 😂 Finally, someone breaks the silence!
Ha! That gave me a good laugh!
On a side note, do you have recommendations for where to buy quality furniture that is not only to the trade? Thanks! 😍
Thank you for saying this!! I HATE that look too and don’t understand how it’s a thing right now!
Possibly there IS a good looking version of tie dye sweats out there somewhere but all the ones I’ve seen are just ugly. Not going there. I like your alternatives except the leopard print leggings (and I love leopard). Just looking a little too camel toe for my taste.
Thank you for saying what I’ve been feeling/noticing since the lock down!
100 percent agreed! My rule is if I wore a trend it’s first time around, I am too old for it the second time!
Amen.
YES. Thank you for keeping it classy!
Yes! I laughed out loud when I read the title of this post. I am right there with you! I was an 80’s child and cringe every time I see someone on Insta wearing a matching tie dye sweatsuit. I just can’t…..nope.
