Round Up: Retail Sofas & Sectionals
In our work we do use a lot of “to the trade” only goods, but not always! Many time we mix custom items with retails goods, because lets face it, even people with bug budgets don’t want to spend a lot of furniture for all their spaces! There are so many great retail options these days for sofas and sectionals– many with the ability to choose between lots of various fabrics too to make it more custom for your space. Have you used the SOMA from PB? I need a small space sectional but not sure if this one will hold up or be comfy enough.
#12 is my dream sofa. I’m not in a position to buy something now as a) I don’t really neeeeeeeed to and b) I’m not sure what kind of space we’ll be in size-wise in the next couple of years. But man that is a good looking sofa. Wish they had more fabric choices!
Interesting topic, as always. I want to share my two cents on the Carlisle english roll arm sofa from Pottery Barn (#4 in your first set of pictures). It looks much better than it holds up. Wildly disappointed that my five year old sofa looks like it is 20 years old. I custom ordered an ivory linen/cotton blend with down cushions. I vacuum and flip regularly but nothing can fluff and keep up the seated cushions from flattening out in the center. I have now resorted to sticking a pillow underneath the two cushions. I am the only person in my home too weighing in at 125lbs and when I do use it, it is for a few hours in the evening. It is very comfortable but if you expect it to stay showroom looking, it is not happening. and FYI no kids or pets to splay all over it. I have gone in-store but no help. I just sent an online comment to customer service once I saw it again, it got under my skin and I wanted to warn others. I do not have much hope. I do like the style but in this case, you do not get what you pay for.
I have the same issue with my Pottery Barn sofa! My husband is about 200 lbs and he constantly complains about sinking into the frame. You can imagine what my cushions look like. So disappointing!
Courtney, thanks for chiming in! I felt guilty complaining on Erin’s blog but it was not a cheap investment. I was feeling so proud of my grown-up purchase! Maybe there are more of us out there and together, we can get them to fix our situations! Have a great day!

Thanks for this! I’m curious how you’re able to convince someone to invest in a custom piece that they can’t sit on beforehand? Is there a certain set of specs that pretty much guarantee it’s going to be comfortable, or are you able to provide some kind of sample cushion while people are figuring out what they want?
I see lots of sofas online at that look like they would work for me, but I am not brave enough to buy one without trying it out in person.
Hi Erin, Can you do a post about decorating with a couch that has a chaise? Specifically placement of other chairs, and coffee tables? It’s so hard!
Ugh, was just thinking this. I’ve wanted a sectional with a chaise for years, but cannot for the life of me figure out how to make it work in my living room. I imagine it depends greatly on the shape of the space you put it. At least, that’s my issue. Ugh again.
It’s VERY much dependent on what the room orientation and shape is. One rule of thumb is not to put the chaise on the entry side of the room to not impede the “flow” into the room.
Classic indeed. With big upholstered pieces, I always go as classic and neutral as possible since I don’t have the budget to change sofas every few years. I update and change the look with colorful throws and pillows.
My sofa looks most like #2 and my sectional #6. Very happy with both.
